Lawyer to PE?
Hi Everyone,
I am currently an associate at a large firm in NYC. I would like to switch to PE. Obviously, it is going to be a difficult process to make the transition. My question is, what makes me a stronger candidate? CFA or MBA?
Thanks!
If you are at a reputable firm (Skadden, PW, Cravath, Sullivan, Wachtell, etc.), you can try to lateral directly into IB, spend a few years and then recruit. Are you in a relevant group (M&A/Financing/RX)?
CFA won't help - no one cares. Even with an MBA at a top program (H/S) AND with top PE experience pre-MBA, it is very difficult to land at a reputable firm post-MBA. Just the hard truth, and more firms are starting to move away from the 2 and out program.
The type of law def matters. I’ve seen guys from places like milbank make the jump to special sits PE. The reality is, a mid level buyside professional spends their lives working on legal docs anyways.
I am working at a top firm. My practice is in M&A, Securities and Corp Finance. Will that help? Thanks for the advice!
