Learning a country from scratch

I'm currently interning in the S&T division of a BB in an EM country, and recently received a project which I'm finding quite daunting.

I have to write an economic report for the first half of the year in the country, and forecast the outlook for the rest of 2009.

I'm finding this quite overwhelming, especially when looking at the one the S&T team made last year. Writing up something like this would be impossible without a deep fundamental understanding of the local economy, but is this really something I can pick up quickly?
