Least common race/ethnicity in banking?
Hey everyone,
So I've been reaching out to professionals in the industry/ networking via cold email, linkedin, etc.
I've noticed that my race is not too common in the finance industry and is actually pretty rare. I've recently google searched a few investment funds / boutique banks in my area and have found that a few of the directors and analysts share the same descent as me. I know it's important to reach out to alumni from your school because thats obviously a key "similarity" or something you can both relate too.
But... since they did not attend my school, should I mention in my cold emails that were of the same nationality?
As I'm writing this, I already have the feeling that it would be weird but being that it seems to be only a few [insert nationality] in the industry, maybe they might appreciate it?
Definitely don't mention it that outright unless there is a shared connection (i.e. same church/mosque/temple, etc.). That being said it's possible that they'll see your name/picture on linkedin which could maybe help.
Also - fuck your username
lol I couldn't come up with something witty
You should also consider applying to minority focused events and programs.
idk if this is sarcasm. I'm not looking for a handout, just stating an observation that I've made.
Agree with poster above. You should also look into SEO. It's an amazing program from friends who were lucky enough to be selected.
No it's not sarcasm at all. If you're a minority / URM these are great events to network and connect with professionals in the industry. Had a friend who attended a URM event at a BB, connected with an MD and was able to land an accelerated interview because of it.
Oh alright sorry for the misunderstanding and thanks but I'm not exactly sure if I'm considered a minority
All of the diversity programs (which usually happen in the spring - or early fall) will say on the applications if they are looking for specific ethnicities. In all honestly, you will probably be considered diverse if you are not white, asian, or indian. Be on the look out for the applications for those - they are on the corporate websites.
Where do you see middle eastern falling? On most official documents they’re considered Caucasian or white. Should middle eastern people apply for diversity programmes or would that be considered unethical?
I have noticed there are not many hispanics in banking
I mean I guess I'm not a minority because I'm considered white. Im Portuguese and welsh, my last name is welsh.
That's not a "minority." You're white..
If you grew up or lived in Portugal (or are 2nd generation) and speak Portuguese fluently then sure, why not drop that in to conversation.
Native American and I don't think it's even really that close. But yeah lmao at the Welshman who thinks he's a URM.
I never said I was a minority.... The purpose of this post was to state I made an observation that there are few Portuguese people in banking and should I mention my background in my cl when emailing other Portuguese directors. I haven't met any welsh people in banking either. If you read my posts, I've never said that I was a minority...
You should reach out to Latam coverage groups, plenty of Portuguese people there!
Maybe when emailing... but I would say only if you are fluent and are very connected to the country. Don't include in cover letter though because when an HR person looks at it they might have a wtf moment since it won't feel relevant to them. Honestly better to bring up in a phone conversation with people. Will feel more natural - might look a bit stalkery if you are bringin up your shared heritage in a cold email.
Wall Street is extremely diverse -- ambition, initiative, and the competitive spirit is not unique to any race
Gentiles
What is Eskimo? Alex.
Who had all this shit to throw out?
Is it more difficult to fit in if you're from an underrepresented culture in your bank/group? Curious as to how this plays out for the few minority/diversity summer interns, i.e. ever felt excluded?
Composition of races in the workplace? (Originally Posted: 05/30/2013)
Hi, monkeys. As far as I know, banks especially in the wall street are the place with people from many countries. But I wonder how much international they are. Please tell me the composition of races in your workplace! Thanks a lot :D
Lots of Changs and Patels if you know what I mean.
