Leaving Job Early for Analyst Position
Hi all,
I'm in sort of an odd predicament. I teach FT as a science teacher (graduated '15). I started in Sept, and my contract is up in June. I just got hired for Deloitte as a BTA. There's lots of pros to starting in Feb (Pay, smaller cohort, more personalized training), BUT leaving teaching midyear is a douche move.
Looking for a bit of perspective as this has become a very difficult decision for me. The other option I have is starting BTA this June with 2016 graduates.
I'd go with the February start date. Your priority right now is not your current job; it's your future job. Spending any more time in your current job is not going to help you out.
Is there a way to let the school administration know right now? That'd be the most responsible move. They'll have about 2 months to prepare for your replacement, and you can assure them that you'll be helpful to help with the transition these two months leading up to February.
Leaving in the middle of the school year is a horribly selfish move. Just suck it up, honor your commitment (more to the kids than to the district), and start your new gig in June.
I agree with @kingfalcon. Stay, honor your commitment to the job and just start in June. It's only a few months and it won't make a difference over the course of your career. I'd have to imagine you had at least a small degree of passion to teach kids so don't blow them off even if there are no professional repercussions to you.
Having worked at Deloitte as a BA, I highly suggest you wait for the fall start date. At Deloitte, your network is critically important in ensuring that you work with good people on good projects. I felt that starting with a large group was a major ADVANTAGE and starting with a smaller cohort is a disadvantage. Starting with a larger group gave me a strong initial network and that the firm makes a much bigger effort to successfully integrate new hires when an office is taking in 20+ people vs. just a few (e.g., opportunities to network with partners). The individuals I knew who started off cycle definitely felt more isolated and several left the firm pretty quickly.
One caveat is that the Feb start date was a new thing when I started (only 2 people vs. 25 in fall in my office), and maybe they have expanded it. If, for example the #s are more like 10 people vs. 20+ people its probably not a major disadvantage. Also, I was a BA, not a BTA, although I think the experience is pretty similar in the respects I mention above.
Have some patience and start in the fall. People at Deloitte will respect that you honored your commitment for the full school year. Also, it will give you time to take the GMAT between the end of the school year and your fall start date, which is highly recommended.
