Legit Internship?

Does this look like a decent sophomore summer internship? This is with a Boutique(not in NYC, think SF/Chicago)

Duties: Industry and company research in the sector; Research investment and acquisition activity in XXX industry; Assistance in preparing company presentations; Facilitating company meetings and conference calls; Some transactional (investment/M&A) exposure is possible, depending on the efficiency and caliber of the individual.

The other offer which I have is an unstructured internship- Big4 Corporate Finance in my home country (I am an international student)

I am a sophomore at a semi-target. I was only able to get a couple of offers for this summer. I would like to know if this kind of an internship would be useful for BB SA next year.

Thanks.

I personally think Big 4 Corp. Fin would be better. From that description, you could potentially learn a lot, but I don't really think you'll be doing very interesting work - research sounds cool, but believe me it gets old after a while.

I think as a sophomore, name-value can outweigh the experience (not by much, and if the work is just earth shattering then obviously it takes precedent). As a junior though, experience is more important though, without question.

That said, I think the Big 4 name value, along with what I'd imagine is a more structured internship program would be better than the work you'd do at the boutique.

With regard to your question about location, I personally don't know. You might want to ask someone with industry experience.

Well, it kinda depends on what you are comparing it to? If you are comparing this to a BB in NYC, then no, its probably not your best choice, but if you are comparing it versus working a part time job all summer or doing nothing at all, it seems like it would be a decent choice.

Its really hard to say how legit it is with the vagueness of your post. I am sure if you posted the name of the firm someone might have some more insight on to what to expect or whether you should run the other way, but I realize your intent was to not say the name, industry, or location.

Reading through the description makes it seem a bit like a supporting role for various office functions, but in all honesty internships are what you make them. Ultimately you write what you want on your resume, so you can twist your experiences to imply lots and lots of different things.

Obviously everyone wants to have exposure to transactions, but doing the research and presentations are good skills to learn and be comfortable with especially at a sophomore level.

Maybe someone else will have some advice for you.

Good luck.

take your hand and walk you through the process. Learn to think on your own and make a sound decision based on the information you are given.

Take the big 4 offer if you gauge that the research role is not going to give you quality experience. Come interview time next year, the big 4 reputation is most likely going to carry its own weight whereas the other company you probably have to "sell" your experience there.
