Level of travel now doing Covid-19

Hi guys.

Before Covid-19 really hit consulting was often 4-5 days on client site each week. Then Covid-19 came and suddently everybody was force to work from an office or at home.

Do you think the level of travel will return to the previous level after Covid-19 is over? If, not maybe fewer days on the road and then more days in the office?

Thanks

The honest answer is that nobody really knows and there are going to be different answers based on your firm, your client, and your specific team / project

There will be teams/clients/projects with typical 80% travel (M-Th every week), as well as 0% travel. I personally don't think 80% will be that common anymore for most people. If I had to guess, I'd say that a mix of fewer days at client site (but still there e.g. every other week, or maybe M-W, or maybe for key milestone weeks), some days together in the local office (if on a team with same office staffed), and some days home will be most common

During my internship (MBB), a lot of projects were 'colocating,' which means that the team would all meet up at one office and work together.  My project had no client travel (the clients did come to us once for 3 days) but we colocated in a local office M-W. I personally liked the colocating because I got to spend time with the team in person without the intensity of traveling to a far away office.

co-locating is the best of both worlds imo - you pretty much always pick an office that at least one person is actually based in, meaning some weeks you get to WFH. on the weeks you travel to a teammate's office, you're gonna be in major cities with nice hotels and diverse/high quality food options. not being sent to bumfuck, flyover state honestly makes things travel so much more tolerable

if youre a junior hire, id push as much as possible co-locate - its extremely beneficial for your development
