Linkedin - Contacting someone already in your friend list... but you don't know who it is

I tried searching through a few linkedin topics, but I couldn't find this dilemma. So here goes:

A MD from a top bank added me to his linkedin awhile back. But I don't recall his name. And I don't recall meeting him (he's not an alumni, we shared a prior company connection, but different regions... and different groups that wouldn't interact). But he sent me the request, so I wasn't going to not accept.

In a few days I'll be traveling for work to the city this MD is based in. I'd like to make it an actual connection, maybe even ask him for some advice on how to switch over to his bank or something similar.

How should I go about doing this? I think he might have mistaken me for someone else... maybe we had some common link and he just decided to add everyone he thought was familiar. But should I open up a conversation about not actually knowing him but I'm in town and would like to meet him?

And how should I go about doing it? Via the linkedin mail so he knows it's from one of his connections, or through his personal email that he has listed on his profile?

Thanks!

Thanks Anthony.

Should I do it via linkedin though - so the guy knows I'm from his list? Or just email him directly?

Should I attach my resume too or is that too aggressive? I find when I attach my resume, people will definitely look at it and get back to you with comments.

I would go through regular email, but put in the subject line XYZ - LinkedIn Connection or whatever else you think might catch their attention.

You can put a resume on there. It might be considered forward, but it can't hut. All depends on how you approach it I suppose.
