Cold Linkedin message
Title says it all. What are peoples' thoughts on sending a cold linkedin message to an analyst if you are not able to get their email address? I was thinking about adding a note introducing myself when I sent a connection request, but I don't know if this will come off as weird. Please let me know.
It helped me get my current role. Just word it the way you would a regular cold email. It might seem awkward (and admittedly isn't the absolute best way to reach out to someone) but most people don't seem to mind it. You'll always rub someone off the wrong way no matter what approach you take.
Appreciate the input. The way I was thinking about it is that the worst thing that could happen is they just don't respond right?
Eh, worst case scenario I've had is this Associate II at Jefferies hit me back with a, "cute message, don't contact me again"
Yeah, so the most likely scenario is that you won't get a response. That said, you can reach out to tons of analysts on LI and just treat it like a numbers game, where (~10%) may respond and offer some sort of advice. Just make sure you don't say anything completely outlandish in your outreach email and there shouldn't be negative repercussions.
Particularly for the first few interviews, a good way to get up to speed would be through just scheduling informational interviews with investment bankers directly through The Lobby. You pick whichever bank and group you're interested in talking to and pay them to connect you directly to mentors at investment banks.
Is there a good reason for the MS or is this just some sort of "circle the wagons" thing, since I promoted a site other than WSO?
You’re clearly using the forum to promote a paid service. I wouldn’t recommend anyone use a paid service to connect with people at banks. The whole purpose of networking is to find an actual connection... how is that going to happen if the bankers is being paid to talk to you?
The only upvotes you get when you post these ads for the lobby are from your alternate accounts. I’ll admit you do a better job of hiding it compared to some of the other spam on this website, but you should really just stick to traditional paid advertisements.
Maybe I’m wrong about this whole thing. Get your account certified and prove that you actually work in the industry and maybe people will take you more seriously. I probably won’t though.
I’m pretty sure you’ve had a lot more comments that promote the lobby, but you’ve edited them once the threads move from the main page to keep your profile looking more legit.
Something's always better than nothing as long as you keep your wits about you.
LinkedIn networking: Cold messaging (Originally Posted: 06/18/2018)
Hi all,
I am currently in the process of searching for a 6-month off-cycle IBD internship preferably in NY. Because these are relatively rare and the programs less structured (recruiting-wise) than SA positions, I was wondering whether or not cold messaging MDs and Heads of HR who accept my LinkedIn invites. To be more specific, dual-citizen applying to banks from that country in NY and studying outside the US.
Hi streetrules, no, I never sleep and so I can respond to any lonely threads (like this one) at all hours of the night. Impressive, I know ;-)
Or maybe the following pros can chime in... @jdavidsigmon" Mark-Harvey petermiller1801
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
Always be sure to add a note to a LinkedIn message when reaching out. I don't accept connection requests from people I don't directly recall meeting if they don't have a note attached, but if they make a simple ask in their request, I'll usually help them out if I have the time.
Cold adding people on Linkedin. (Originally Posted: 02/02/2015)
I'm considering adding the people I cold email on linkedin so they can actually see who I am (i.e mentioning that I added them on the email). How do you guys respond when someone randomly adds you on linkedin?
Cold e-mail plus linkedin request? Double stalker bonus points.
I reject those requests. see this thread: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/linkedin-restriction
consensus from WSO is that it's creepy
Thanks for this!
I also tend to decline them. I don't really care to fill my linkedin with people I've never met so if someone's not willing to even send me a message or email beforehand, I'm not really going to bother.
Like someone said above, it's how I got my current role as well. I find that Linkedin messages had a better hit rate than regular cold emails maybe because it links directly to a professional profile.
As with most ways that you reach out to current bankers, it works better if you have some sort of mutual connection or way of relating to the person. I had an extremely high hit rate on my Linkedin messages to alums.
