LinkedIn/Internship Question

Just a little background info: right now I'm a sophomore at a non-target with a 3.9 GPA and I'm looking for an IB internship this summer in Charlotte.

So I was researching firms in the Charlotte area and I decided to look them up on LinkedIn to see if I have any connections. The only person I have some sort of connection with is at a boutique in downtown Charlotte and it is through our Fraternity's LinkedIn group.

I want to message him on LinkedIn in regards to an internship or some sort of continued contact outside of LinkedIn (coffee, phone call, anything). I had success earlier this when I messaged a Managing Director of Municipal Securities at a very large IB in NYC who also happens to be in the same Fraternity. We had a 30 minute discussion over the phone and he told me contact him again my junior year in the possible pursuit of an internship.

Since messaging someone through LinkedIn is rather limited, how do you all suggest I get "the most bang for my buck" through a message on LinkedIn that could lead to something down the road?

I would just introduce yourself - name, school, year and major. Mention that you're a part of the same Fraternity and ask him if he could meet you sometime or if you could get 5-10 minutes with him on the phone to learn more about what he does and about the finance world in general. Once you get the call, based on how it goes, you can get in talks about an internship. Usually, most people I have approached this way are willing to help and if you're bright and sincere, they'll come forward with some help and useful advice. Don't forget to ask if he can introduce you to anyone else he thinks might be a good person for you to speak to. It'll help you build your network too. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps and good luck with the search!
