list banking textbook on resume?
in a bit of a quandary...
i'm trying to lateral into banking from an f500 finance position. i recently read through an investment banking textbook and learnt the basics of valuation and modeling. would it be a good idea to add a line in the 'education' section on my resume that shows that i read it?
as i see it now:
pro - right now there's nothing on my resume directly related to banking, and this would show that i know the basics, increasing my likelihood of getting an interview
con - this would result in getting grilled much more harshly once i actually get the interview, whereas if i leave it off, and manage to get an interview anyway, i'll seem surprisingly impressive with my knowledge of technicals
any recommendations? particularly from people who have reviewed resumes from the hiring side?
thanks
Umm... no, thats fuckin ridiculous.
You're better off having a Skills section where you list that stuff... i.e. corporate finance, valuation, financial modeling, etc...
But you better be able to show a mastery of it if its on your resume, a level of mastery that reading a finance textbook generally doesn't give you.
No.
Questions like this blow my mind.
You are smart enough to get employed, yet lack the necessary common sense to tell yourself that putting "I read book X" on your resume is retarded?
wow, on the one hand, thanks for the advice, on the other hand, take it easy? there's a reason i came on here to ask the question rather than just going ahead and doing it...
i mostly expected this answer i guess, but my question then is whether there's any way to take advantage of the fact that i know some basic technicals and am not just a random corp fin guy who knows zilch about banking. was hoping to be able to use this as an edge for getting interviews, maybe that's not possible though
Unless you wrote the textbook...
I wouldn't do it.
I'd pick some kind of a modeling course that gives you a (bullshit, but nonetheless) certification. It can cost a couple hundred $ if it's self-study, or upwards to a couple of grand if it's an actual lecture-based course. You can definitely extract 2-3 legit bullets from it and it will demonstrate your interest.
Don't listen to these guys, they're just haters. You should absolutely list it on your resumé.
If you really want to turn heads in HR, though, you should let them know if you've read Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, or Lord of the Flies. That will really differentiate you from the pretenders and ensure that your resumé is on the top of the stack.
enlightening, edmundo
appreciate the feedback midnight_oil
Don't forget to mention other important technical proficiencies like being able to tie your shoes, chew gum whilst (it's important that you say whilst) walking, etc. Things that show you can do the day to day tasks that really facilitate you adding value...
lol i have lots of not-so-good questions.
i strongly third the opinion that you shouldn't do it.
