Listing extenuating circumstances in job application?

Hi guys,
Wanted to keep this quick but I'm an incoming junior at a target school hoping to break into banking this year. I have one internship under my belt from a national well-known manufacturing company in a general FP&A role, which I actually managed to complete virtually last summer while going through chemotherapy - something I am really proud of myself for. I also survived cancer my first year of college, forcing me to miss all of my 2nd semester and nearly all of my 1st semester sophomore year. I wanted to bring this up to employers to explain gaps in my resume and transcript, and also give a plausible explanation for a low GPA. I'm really not sure how to, because I don't want to list 'I SURVIVED CANCER' on a Resume and I've heard that many banks don't take a second look at the generic Cover Letters that they're sent. Any ideas on how to approach this issue?
