London Non-MBB Consulting to PE

I am about to start working at a non-MBB strategy consulting firm in London where I'll have quite a few opportunities to work on PE commercial due diligences (think L.E.K. or a similar firm). My goal is to join a PE firm in a few years and am prepared to work hard to achieve it, but I don't have a clue on how to do it - hope you can help a fellow monkey by answering at least a few questions:

  1. Which firms should I target and what are my chances? (My background: strong CV, but no PE or IB internships)

  2. Who should I be in contact with and when? Mainly headhunters, right?

  3. At my firm, should I try to get staffed on as many PE due diligences as possible or do the PE firms value more balanced strategy consulting background?

  4. Does my job performance matter and do I even need to disclose it? Do I have a better chance if I am top ranked analyst at my firm?
