Long-distance networking- where to start?
I know need to network extensively to secure an internship (I'm at a non-target) but unfortunately I live in Canada and I'm obviously too far away to meet up for an informational meeting. Where do I start? If I am to cold call who do I ask for? Is a job at a BB unrealistic? Any info/tips would be helpful.
Thanks!
Are you looking for an internship in the US and one for this upcoming summer?
In the US, and no not for the upcoming summer. I'm still a sophomore and I want to get ahead, I was considering next summer or the one following that.
Get a LinkedIn if you don't already have one and see if you have any family friends, alumni and such you can connect with who are in banking or know someone in banking. Once you find someone, cultivate that relationship and ask for referrals. You'll start building your network that way. You can also try cold emailing firms from the WSO Company Database
I had pretty good success using LinkedIn Premium's InMail feature and actually got myself an interview at a BB abroad (UK, not US) as well as a few informational interviews. People report mixed results with this, but I think it is worth a try at least for a month to see if it works for you. Best of luck!
That's awesome! I did some searching on LinkedIn and found alumni in VP/SVP/MD positions at BBs so I will definitely have a go at the InMail feature. Thanks!
You don't even need the InMail feature. Change your privacy settings to anonymous, visit their profile page, hit connect, when it asks you how you know them, put down the same school and in the little message box, write down a condensed message
Even better!
Networking Long Distances? (Originally Posted: 07/24/2010)
Currently, I am completing an internship overseas, and would like to get some feedback regarding networking long distances. The internship is expected to end late September, with my flight back to the US the day afterwards. Ideally, I would like to start networking as much as possible while I’m still abroad so I have a head start for fall recruiting, but not sure if I should wait until I get back. Typically I would email or message (LinkedIn) a professional, and try to get an informational interview or phone discussion out of them. But being that I’m overseas, I don’t see professionals taking the time out of their busy schedules, to email me their insights/feedback/advice/etc.. Or would they? I'm sure I could could a 5 line email out of them, but would it be worth it?
So my question is - should I wait till I get back to the States to start networking? Or, try my luck and see if I can get someone who is willing to hear my story and explain theirs through back-and-fourth emailing? Does anyone have any experience with this?
I'm currently networking with a few guys in the Raymond James IT office in Mumbai, so far its working out pretty well, we usually chat up on Skype around midnight EST.
