Looking to get into strategy consulting, please evaluate my resume
I know it's not good enough for MBB, but I'm hoping to break into a tier2/3 firm like Accenture or Deloitte's Strategy & Ops group before I start my MBA. Let me know what you guys think.
Not just saying this because I work there, but Deloitte S&O is not easy to get into. What do you really bring to the table? Coming from audit is actually a huge disadvantage. My colleagues have a very low opinion of accountants, and I'm guessing so do you (presumably why you want to move onto something better). I don't see the second tier as an option for you right now, unless you get very lucky or know someone with significant clout. I would move up to Manager if I were you, and then apply for an MBA. From there, you should have a decent chance (still not a shot at MBB).
Agree with MBP, there's not much on the resume to pique a strategy recruiter's interest. Get that MBA.
what kind of stuff would pique a strategy recruiter's interest? i really want to have some strategy-related work experience before i apply to Bschools.
If you're at Deloitte, network like crazy and try to befriend people from S&O and hope that they are willing to take a chance on you. If you're not at Deloitte, try to transfer to your advisory practice and get staffed on more strategic engagements (there aren't really any pure strategy engagements, but some engagements have some pretty strategic aspects).
i think i have a decent shot at transferring to my firms transaction services group in about a year, will this be helpful to breaking into strategy? i know the work isnt very strategy related, but seems like it would be much better than audit.
Definitely way better than audit. That may be better experience for IB (aren't big4 transaction advisory groups just lower middle market M&A advisory practices?). Not sure if it's really a step in the right direction for MC though. I still think advisory would be your better bet.
besides deloitte S&O consulting (which will be very tough to get), do you kno which big4 consulting/advisory group has strategy related work? seems like a lot of random stuff gets lumped into the advisory groups so i dont want to end up doing something thats not relevant for what i want
