Looking to start an equity research firm
Quick Introduction:
I've visited WSO on and off over the years, I'm a Actuarial Science Grad however I've trained as a chartered financial accountant within the private equity and Asset Management space.
My true passion is equity and investment research with a gearing towards both Value and Tech/Growth. Many will ask the question of why I haven't already pursued a career in equity research , the truth is though I had a great degree and excellent A level/High School grades my GCSE/Junior school grades for certain subjects were not up to scratch(I put in absolutely no work) ultimately this meant not a single firm would look at my application.
With all that out of the way.
Proposal:
I'm keen on being entrepreneurial and hence pursuing a non traditional route, I don't think I could achieve it on my own but I do believe that it is possible to produce quality research and get attention if you have collaborated with the right people. I'd love to hear from people of varying experience on whether they would be interested in pursuing a partnership whereby ideas/experience is shared and ultimately I hope this could lead to us working together as a team and potentially creating an equity research firm from the ground up.
Many people will write this off as impossible but I truly believe if you can add value and create a reputation for excellence then the opportunities will present themselves.
Please feel free to either reply on here or PM me directly.
For those interested, My first project will be creating an equity research report for Snap inc, I will be starting my initial earnings forecasting modelling very soon once I have done a little more reading and gathered some assumptions upon which the model will be built.
I like it. Good luck with SNAP!
Make a big call either way, because one of them will be right. I am betting to the downside.
Thanks, I'm attempting to take an unbiased view on the stock and let the forecasts and market information dictate whether its a buy or sell, having said all that its likely to be a sell but I just need to have all the right reasons why.
Do you currently work in ER yourself?

Your best bet is to forego the ER portion. Another route that's still entrepreneurial would be to form your own Investment Club (Google it). You still do the research, but back up your research by taking a position and theoretically making money off it and developing a track record.
how to start an equity research business (Originally Posted: 06/23/2013)
has anybody done something like this before, i'm curious, what are the things involved... i came across this question when i read on some website that the short sell idea of Herbalife to the HF manager William Ackman was provided by some equity research business. 1. How do equity research businesses earn money. 2.Do Investment banks, HF managers employ equity research consultants on a retainer basis?
thanks
1 - Subscriptions if independent, commissions if they work alongside a sales & trading division 2 - No
The answer to how equity research makes money has been answered extensively on these forums. Use the search function.
You can start by writing investment articles/ideas for some websites that pay contributors. You can get your name out that way as a solid or terrible ER analyst.
Good luck.
Can you provide an example for such a website?
