Lost internship for freshman summer

Hi everyone,

Im currently a student at a target and I had a couple of internships I was counting on through contacts for my freshman summer but both fell through for unrelated reasons at the last minute.

How crucial is it to have an internship freshman summer and is it too late for me to cold email my way to another boutique internship?

Important but not the end of the world if you don't have one. Do something with your summer though whether that be taking classes, working a regular summer job, etc. The worst thing you can do is nothing. Also, with no summer internship as a freshman, you gotta make sure you are involved at school so you have some sort of finance-related experience.

It doesn't matter at all. Work a "fun" job with chill hours and customer service experience and you'll have more than enough answers to "tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult client / coworker".

Ideally, you want an internship every summer. Freshman summer internship allows you to be competitive for a sophomore summer internship and so on. If I were you, I would start networking during the summer to try to secure either a late summer internship or fall 2021 / spring 2022 internship.

But, if you somehow think you can secure a sophomore internship one way or another - go ahead and feel free to skip out this summer and do something marginally business/finance related so you can talk about it later (i.e. business school summer program).

Probably best place to look that take off-cycle interns, btw, are search funds for private equity.

How early would you say to start reaching out to contacts for a freshman summer internship? Incoming freshman this fall here
