Lower MM Activist Fund or PE? - IB Analyst
Hello,
I am a 3rd year analyst in a coverage group at a BB. I have been focused on getting into MM PE, however this has not panned out. I would like to own / run a business one day and have an interest in investing. Therefore, I have targeted PE as I believe the skill set is very transferable.
I am now quite far along in interviews at a small (~10 person) activist fund and I am considering taking the offer if I get it. I have a few questions:
- How comparable is the skill set between activist investing, and buyout PE? (Identifying inefficiencies, suggesting ways for improvement etc.)
- Does working at an activist hedge fund "pigeon hole" me for any other opportunities on the buy side?
- If I still was interested in making a move to PE, would working at an activist fund be a burden (compared to staying in banking - I will be an associate this summer)?
- How hard is it to break into PE after business school (with an IBD / HF activist background)?
- What are the main things I should "look out" for at the fund? Assuming I get the offer, I was planning on asking for returns - is there anything else I should do my due diligence on to look "under the hood"?
- Comp is around $100k base (have not discussed bonus). What is market for a small fund (~10 people)? This is NYC.
Thanks
