Lowe’s Wants To Turn Its Workers Into Super-Humans
With all the news of automation possibly replacing thousands of bottom-line jobs, it seems like Lowe's is trying to implement advanced technology in a different way. Instead of replacing workers with machines, the article states that;
Lowe’s recently announced they’ve been testing out a robotic exoskeleton on a few of their warehouse workers. The futuristic, non-motorized technology is designed to ease muscle and joint strain for employees who spend their days lifting heavy objects.
The article also mentions how this new exoskeleton would work, it goes as follows;
The exoskeleton fits like a rock-climbing harness and has rods that sit along the spine and thighs. When an employee squats down or bends over, these rods collect potential energy. That energy is then transferred back into their back and legs when they stand up, allowing them to bear greater loads than they could on their own.
Not only is this just a new spin on the whole automation debate, but it seems quite cool. Using technology to make the job easier, not to replace the person doing the job. I'm quite in favor of this.
Questions:
1. What do you think about this?
2. Could this really help their productivity, or is it just to appeal to consumers/workforce?
lol
This is why I shouldn't post when It's late lol. Fixed it now, thanks for spotting it.
I need this exoskeleton for the gym
FTFY
Seems like a good idea. Why use machines when you can go straight into cyborgs?
It sounds really cool until someone gets hurt/killed using one of those things and the lawsuits come.
Then they will simply can the workers and replace them with robots full time, which makes much more sense IMO, from what I understand they're using this in warehouses? There's a lot of new, pretty interesting warehouse tech coming online so it will likely be a temporary thing.
