L/S equity jobs out of business school?
I did PE before business school. Recruiters keep telling me I'll never get a job out of business school in HFs. I know that's garbage, but there's an element of truth given opportunistic recruiting and the limited number of MBAs in the L/S equity HF world. Can anyone shed better light about post-MBA HF recruiting from H/S/W? Thanks.
dude you can totally get a job in L/S with PE experience prior if you go to a top 5 b school. It doesn't even need to be HSW, Columbia sends a bunch of people into HF's, Booth sends a couple too.
H/S/W, CBS, Booth, you have a shot at L/S equity HF
Just graduated at one of those schools. Bunch of classmates did it. That said, it’s pretty unstructured as far as I could see: people constantly worked on pitches and sent them around to funds, went to pitching competitions, etc.
Based on that, start looking at co’s and come up with ideas (pitches shouldn’t be longer than 1-2 pages) and reach out to people about your ideas/ invite them to coffee chats. A bit of a numbers’ game but definitely doable.
Very helpful, thank you. What can you say about quality of funds? My real "detailed" concern is that, I will only have access to some of the millions of shitty HFs, not SM L/S Tiger Cubs or equivalent (e.g., Altimeter)
Funnily enough, a guy in the previous class landed either at Altimeter or Whale Rock straight outta b-school, but that's anecdotal.
True, it's not easy to pitch directly to these guys. However, we've had the likes of Ackman, Loeb or Tiger Cub founders (i.e. Halvorsen or Coleman types) come visit in some classes and be open to talk to students about working at these funds and a relationship, as superficial as it may be at first, can be developed (or so I hear, a buddy of mine interned at a Tiger cub after debating against one of the aforementioned speakers in a class).
It seemed to me it's essentially a grind: do pitches, chat to funds and professors (most of whom are very well connected), integrate the feedback then do even more pitches. It ain't guaranteed, but it can land you in a position to have a conversation with one of these SMs.
Hope this helps.
