LSE IB Conference - Problem, Please Help
Hi guys,
Firstly, I'd like to thank WSO for the LSE Investment Banking Conference thread from few weeks ago (I think its deleted). I heared about the event here, and I applied that day.
Event details:
http://www.lse-ibc.com/
Date: Saturday, 1st December 2012
Time: 8.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.
I have received their positive response yesterday:
"...Congratulations! You have been selected to attend the LSE Investment Banking Conference. Your application was exceptional and fit the criteria we were looking for. We would thus like to invite you to attend the conference as a delegate..."
However, I have a problem - can't afford a plane ticket to London. I mean, its hard to find a good flight time considering my location, so I would probably have to arrive the day earlier and leave one day afterwards. I live in the continental Europe. There are expenses for the subway, accomodation etc. and I live a very modest student life (cutting costs on anything in following months is pretty much out of the question). In addition, there is a ticket expense.
Response (ticket payment) deadline is tomorrow.
Sure, I could borrow the money from friends, but it would be hard to repay it (legally). Laws are pretty harsh here, and since I only hold a student visa, I can earn very little money working, and it is not easy to find the job. Getting money from parents is not an option, they kinda dont even know what IB is or these conferences... they just want me to get the degree and are pretty naive about the whole working thing.
I worked as a bouncer in the night club before for a very good money/time (illegally), but that was really the only option and there was a good risk that someone would find out - consequences would be devastating for my academic career and life here.
Now, what do you guys think?
Is this event even selective or did a huge number of random people get an invitation too?
Is there a possibility to get sponsored for this kind of event? Just explain honestly my situation and maybe ask if they could sponsor a trip for me?
Is it worh it owing the money to somebody, which would requre quite a months of legal part time work to repay? (uni is pretty hard for me since im not studying on my native language or English)
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Many thanks!
Received my invite recently too. I know of people who haven't been invited and from the sounds of it, it's full already.
1) Congrats 2) Any ideas regarding my case? 3) I guess that you are studying at LSE? Any clue how many students are being invited? How many applicants?
I'm confused why you would apply to this sort of event not knowing much about it and knowing that you can't afford to go....
I applied at the last moment, but I was pretty sure that I can afford it. Some extra expenses came while waiting for their answer, couldnt do nothing about it.
But you are right, I didnt know much about the event, didnt inform myself.
It's not that expensive to get to London from Europe. The underground will cost you like £5 max, you can go home that same evening and if necessary get up early to leave.
i think most importantly you need to ask yourself what do you hope to get out of attending this conference and do you think it would be much of a value add at all.
I have organized something similar and i think this would be a great chance to gain some insights, but having said that, it's not a must for you to head for such events to have a better understanding of the industry.
Hi Battleship. I have been selected to go to LSE SU IBC as well. I do think this is a awesome opportunity. Where are you from?
Hi everyone! I have also been selected for the conference! I'm from Spain, where are you from?
Nice! Are you from ESADE? Do you happen to know how many applicant there were?

Hello Monkeys,
So I was wondering if any of you will be attending the IBC in London this weekend. If you're going what workshops are you attending?
Another important point- where are you planning on staying? Most hostels are booked (for Saturday night especially)...guess it's all good as long as I have a place to sleep Friday.
Hope to see you all there!
I apologize if this is a repeat post, just couldn't find one for this year's conference.
I'm going, staying at my own house :)
Same here, what have you guys signed up for?
I'm really torn between workshops - they all look so good. I think I'll go to the IB in Africa one with the GS guy and the one with the ex-CRO from Deutsche Bank.
I live in London so works pretty sweet for me although I've heard there's quite a few people coming over from continental Europe and the U.S.
I know someone coordinating it ^^
