Lunch with VP
after having a call with a VP at an EB, he said we should meet for lunch (networking for ft recruiting here). How would this be different than a normal phone call? and should I be paying for the lunch or let the VP pay or should I split the bill?
Same as a phone call, and then move on to what he likes outside work, talk about sports or music. You can offer to split the bill and he will most likely offer to pay it, say no once, he will offer once again and thank him politely. He knows that you most likely have some debt for college and he probably has a lunch allowance to pay these things.
Thank you!
Vice president RE IB MM dinner tomorrow night (Originally Posted: 10/07/2013)
I have dinner with a VP from a MM in IBD in real estate tomorrow evening. We've been family friends for several years & on a very good terms with him. This summer I hinted to him that I was interest in going full-time for his firm & he was very supportive of that. Last month I asked him to meet up to discuss options of getting an interview at the firm. Any tips on how I should get the interview? I don't want to push too hard, but i don't want to feel like I missed a great opportunity at the end of the dinner. How should I go about getting the job?
Any serious suggestions are much appreciated.
Just be honest - he's a family friend and already knows why you want to meet up.
Tell him what your interest are career wise without specifically saying you want to work at his company, he will likely steer you to his company. As long as you don't come off expecting to get an anything you will be fine. Instead of saying "Can I get an interview with you guys?" ask him how you should continue to network and what his advice would be. If you are not satisfied with his answers then feel free to ask him, express specific interest in his company. Worst case scenario he will probably set you up with some of his friends in the industry.
Also don't order anything that could make a mess on your face/shirt.
Don't act differently just because you're looking for a job. He knows you and likes you because of his previous impressions, so just act yourself.
Slam a couple bottles of wine = always win.
solid advice as well. thanks for the input.
Don't act like all you care about is getting a job through him or at his shop. Show that you are interested in his career path, how he got to where he is, etc.
this is real solid advice. any chance you'd care to elaborate on this thought?
had the dinner last night, interview set up for next week this morning. thanks for the help monkeys.
How did you turn the dinner into an interview? Did you directly ask? How did you carry the conversations? It might be helpful for other monkeys if you can provide some additional detail
