MacCap Infra (IB)
Hey guys,
New here and I did a search up on MacCap Infra IB and the latest post was back in 2013 so I thought I'd post another thread on this (pardon me if I should have posted this in the old thread).
I'm currently in Tokyo and I scored an interview with the MacCap Infra IB team here. A bit about my background, I've been working in a Big4 corporate finance M&A team in Southeast Asia the past 2.5 years and I'm a generalist, so I'm not too familiar with Infra.
I'm not Japanese and I was wondering if anyone could drop any detailed pointers with regards to what the group does (I do know that Infra is MacCap's bread and butter group and I've worked with MIRA before on a transaction, but aside from that I'm not too sure) and how the office in Tokyo is like.
Many thanks in advance!
I do not know about the Tokyo office, but MacCap is the best for Infrastructure so if you are set on that it would be a good choice
Not exactly about Macq Tokyo but basically infrastructure is their main sector focus.
The IB team in SG had reduced its headcount since its peak in the 2000s. 2 years ago, they had offered the IB people in the SG office to shift to the other offices or different functions as they do not have sufficient headcount e.g. IB in HK or MIRA in Singapore. This year, some of the people who started FT for IB got laid off and was not provided the option to change function/office. Infrastructure was the the main source of revenue for the SG IB office and it didn't make sense for them to look at other sectors. I heard the IB office was even advising its PE arm (MIRA) for the bulk of their time.
Anyway, back to your question, Im not exactly sure about the Tokyo office but I am guessing the Infra team will spend a lot of working with MIRA and provide financing.
Hi Woozy and thanks for the helpful post! Especially about the headcount reduction/shifting of resources within the SG IB team.
Thanks Woozy. That's some very useful information. Could you please provide some comments on Mac cap's operation in China? e.g. have they been scaling up or down (hc wise) in HK/Beijing/SH? I'm thinking of doing an internship with them but I'm worried that they may not have the hc at the end of the internship (return offer). Thanks a lot!
Hey, I am not exactly familiar with Macquarie in HK/SH so I cannot really provide any information on it. If this is your only offer, just take it first and do some networking in the meantime while you are there. On the other hand, how is your Mandarin proficiency? I did hear of some people who cannot speak Mandarin leaving the various banks in HK/SH.
Thanks man. I'll see how the interview goes. I'm a native speaker of Mandarin. So language really isn't a problem for me.
I take it as you work/worked in the SG office? Just wondering if you interact with your colleagues in China often (or at all?) How is the brand viewed there in SG? Cheers
