Macro Hedge Fund - analyst work

Most of what's in the news about macro hedge funds is their bets on currencies, commodities, the economy, etc. But do these funds primarily focus flow trading or is there a significant amount of time spent researching companies once a trend and an industry has been identified?

Will a junior person (1-5 years work experience) at a macro fund mostly be involved with researching macro themes or researching companies?
