Macro Hedge Funds - Career Advice
Hi all,
I work at one of the better proprietary trading firms doing global macro research. Mostly event driven / special situations. I've been there for a little over 6 years and am realizing that my lack of experience in equities severely limits my opportunities.
My goal is to work at a macro / multi-strat HF as an Analyst / PM.
Would doing an MBA, followed by a couple years of IB / Equity Research and then applying to HFs make sense for someone in my position?
Thank you
I realized the same thing working as a macro trader at a prop firm. There are very few macro opportunities out there and if you want to switch jobs you are really limited. I am applying for an MBA so I can transition into IB. You can do MBA-->ER--> HF. It might not be easy but I think its very possible.
Apply to a macro strategy/research position at a bank and go from there. Could also move to the trading side at your current firm and build a track record. Doing research at a prop firm is not a great launchpad because 1) not trading/taking risk/building track record and 2) lack of name-brand prestige (BS, I know). Some PM development person at MIllennium doesn't give a flying fuck about SIG.
Agreed that # equity jobs > # macro jobs, but also way more people do equities.
