Maintaining relationship during Analyst Stint

I was just wondering on how people have navigated maintaining their long-term romantic relationships that began in college as an IB analyst, especially when you are living far apart within the city?

My girlfriend, while not in finance or any industry with a similar work-life balance, has friends in banking and understands the struggle. I am not confident that she can handle the unpredictable schedule and worried that things could fall apart if we don't live close by one another. Any advice or thoughts?

It's very difficult if you don't live together. Both MDs in my group married their college girlfriends and their advice was identical. If you think she is the one, move in together. If not, move on and cut her loose. I decided to move in with my girlfriend and it's the best decision I've ever made. Start by laying out your expectations and setting boundaries. My girlfriend was pretty understanding of my work schedule and she's seen firsthand the unpredictability of it since day one. To this day, she still get upset when I cancel our dinner plans, but deep down she gets it. The problem is that regardless of how close you are to someone in banking, you'll never fully understand what the job entails unless you actually do it.

Once again, sit down and have a conversation. Lay out the worst case scenario and ask her if she genuinely thinks that the relationship will work. Depending on her answer, you might need to have a different conversation.

Consider moving in together if you want to play the odds. Seeing each other, at least briefly, in the morning and before going to bed makes a huge difference.

I mean hell in the current environment.  Even if you can sit on the coach together and turn comments while they watch a Show or read.  It makes a big difference all together.
