Majors - Soph looking to do math and econ
Hey guys, I'm new to WSO.
I'm a soph looking to do math and econ. Just curious as to whether firms (for both banking and s&t, bulge brackets and botiques) account for difficulty of major when they look at your resume. i.e. How much does the math major add if it brings my GPA down a bit? (Let's assume 3.6 math/econ and 3.8 just econ).
Thanks in advance.
I am not an expert so don't listen to me, but I think having the Math on your resume would instill more confidence in your quantitative ability more so than just an Econ degree.
Agreed, but don't most econ programs have substantial calc/stat reqs?
I'm an econ major and I've been able to interview with basically everyone.... I have a 3.5. I have friends that are Math/Econ w/3.9 and they only got a couple interviews, its really about the whole package on how you sell yourself rather than the .2 gpa diff. I'm sure there are math/econ majors that can say the opposite as well..
Are you from target or non-target? I am double major math/econ too. By itself Econ is pretty easy and short major (unless you are in some kind of special undergrad. program) and bankers do know this fact. A lot of kids these days try to double econ/pol sci, econ/communications, econ/history, etc. Most of the people from finance I talked to told me math will definitely give me an edge over other similar applicants (math is pretty hard major), but solid work&leadership experience is a must. Try to get your GPA over 3.7 because I've heard that some BB/elite boutiques do GPA screening first. They don't consider anything below 3.6/3.7 (tons of their applicants are from top schools with 3.9 and double majors).
I think most of us are concern with getting an interview. And you are extremely lucky or have amazing connection. Not trying to bash you or anything but 3.5 and Econ major only is pretty weak and I am somewhat surprised that you get a lot of interviews.MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE HE DOESN'T GO TO A FAG SCHOOL LIKE UC DAVIS.
YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD TO GIVE ADVICE (AND, SINCE YOU DID GIVE ADVICE, I'LL LET YOU KNOW THAT YOUR ADVICE HONESTLY BLOWS) SO I DON'T SEE WHY YOU FEEL INCLINED TO DO SO.
... I tried being nice to you and even gave you some advice. However, for you to "not bash" this kid for having a 3.5 makes me think your just a jealous dick, and you seem to know a lot for someone who has no opportunities. I would wish you luck like I did in the PM, but now screw it, not even luck will save you. Cloud9 good job buddy!
How sad if you think GPA is the end all point. For a student who goes to a non target (I do as well BTW) you come off as such a douche bag. Whatever, I've wasted enough time responding to you. Go on talking about "Harvard" and about your wonderful GPA sir.
P.S= "I mean I see kids from Ivy Leagues with 3.8 posting here about not getting anywhere." Did you ever ask yourself if there was another reason why that person was not chosen? You sir are a fool.
Eh, he may have very strong experience or someone pulling for him. There's a kid in my school with a 2.97 who got interviews with GS IBD... Yet, I've got a 3.9 and sophomore BB experience (with an offer to come back) and no interview. On the other hand, I've interviewed with all the top boutiques. This whole process is entirely too random for my liking.
I am sorry everyone, let me make myself more clear, "cloud9, I am sorry if I offend you in any way. If you have amazing work experience/past internships, I am not surprised that you get a lot of interviews. Otherwise I still am."
lol no worries man. It'd be no fun if we agreed. I get that comment a lot anyway. The reason I got most of my interviews was work exp and extra currics. I just meant to say in my original post that math/econ won't be the solution but rather a step in addition to an already sexy resume loaded with work exp/extra curric/skills. GPA and major is only a certain portion of what is factored in (imo) and I've learned through my experiences that you can get by with strengths in different areas rather than focusing completely on that 4.0. But by all means, load up on the math, it can only help. Oh yeah, I go to UCLA.. not exactly sure if we're a target school..doubt it. Best of luck.
in any economy, you should have a diversified skill set and education.
maybe something more functional as well? minor in comp sci, accounting, etc.
The world has changed. And we must change with it.
Even if you aren't interested in a quant. position, having 2 majors still provides a good talking point about being able to juggle a lot of work and still perform well
