Making the switch to working in Asia

I am wondering if anyone here has gone from working in the US at a hedge fund, investment bank, private equity firm, etc. to working in Asia in the same field? I am currently working at a $1 billion AUM hedge fund in the US and would like to work in Hong Kong or Singapore in the next 1-3 years.

The firm I am currently with only has an office in the US, so I would need to find a new job overseas. Has anyone here made the switch? And if so, how did you do it? This is something I have wanted to do for several years, but felt working in the US first will help build my credentials. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Have any friends at BB's in HK? All BB"s (at least in HK) have internal referral programs. I know at the BB i worked at that if you successfully recommend a friend and he/she is hired after the probation period = $20k bonus for you.

Other options are to network I guess. It would be easier I think if you worked at a BB where you could just transfer to the HK office and network to get on the buyside.
