Masters of Economics- S&T?
Hey I am currently an undergrad in Canada, and go to a top banking target; However, over my undergrad years I have come to realize I am more interested in doing S&T. I have taken some advanced economics courses and actually really enjoy economics, and was wondering if getting a Masters of Economics at UofT would help me land a trading role at one of the BB's in Canada.
(I have already looked at the UofT MFE but for arguements sake, please try to focus more on just the MA)
Which part of sales and trading are you interested in?
the part that I am not interested in is the whole agency trading aspect. To some extent, I want to have the flexibility to actually make some of my own decisions, and not just putting in orders for outside buyers. Product wise, I am pretty open
No matter how people may try and fight it, all forms of trading and almost all aspects of banking are going to the more quantitatively inclined. MA in economics is not far beyond undergraduate economics in terms of quantitative ability.
I love economics too but the reality is a computer can analyze large data sets more efficiently than humans. Also keep in mind that the more difficult to price products are more difficult to price because of the mathematics involved and you have no choice but to accept it, do the math/cs or be another idiot banker.
Disregard to jktecon, he clearly has no idea about BB trading. What he says might be true of algo/HFT trading, but not for the typical desk at a BB. For example to work on a flow equity derivs desk you dont need to know any programming or too much maths (not more than you would find in a standard econ degree), and i know structured credit trading desks that hire econ majors all the time.
What I meant was, do you want to be a salesman or a trader?
"I have already looked at the UofT MFE but for arguements sake, please try to focus more on just the MA"
...why? MFE makes a lot more sense than MA Econ, esp for S&T
Spoke to a VP of FX Prop Trading at a BB last week and he advised me to pursue a Masters in Economics over a MFE if I wished to take the Macro trading route. TRNTO, which school do you attend? I'm a sophomore at a Canadian banking target school, but total crapshoot for S&T. Do feel free to PM me if you wish.
evilbyaccident:: I want to be a trader but nothing where I am forced to sit around all day putting in ONLY trades for clients Macro: I go to one of queens/ivey
