Materials to gauge interest in real estate

Hey guys, was wondering if there is a general industry primer, blog or news site that I could read to see if I have an interest in cre. I've been focused on traditional IB/PE my whole uni experience and never really gave a look to other industries that may fit me better. Thanks in advance.

I can't think of anything condensed off the top of my head, but would highly recommend picking up a copy of The Real Estate Game by Poorvu. Excellent overview of how the industry works, intertwined with really interesting anecdotes from Poorvu's experiences. It's one of those educational resources that reads somewhat like a novel and I'd be surprised if you don't have an urge to start doing deals after reading

I second this—still my favorite RE book since I began my career. You can probably get through this book in a couple days and come out with a pretty solid understanding of real estate fundamentals.

The WSJ has the property report every Wednesday. They highlight usually some big deals or trends in real estate, often institutional deals. NYTimes.com has a real estate section, mostly residential but there are some articles on commercial. I wouldn't say these are the best ways to gauge your interest, but does it interest you to know who are the big players in major landmark buildings, or who is the developer behind the newest buildings being delivered in your city?

Entrepreneurship is a big theme here for many, is that of interest for you? Many look to make the jump to running solo, but most don't know of when to make that leap. RE isn't terribly difficult. There are no crazy algorithms that traders use, excel models don't really get too complicated. Its really just about being a deal maker, having good ideas on what and where to invest in, and knowing how to time things right with market.
