MBB Recruiting Chances - Feedback requested
Hello,
I am looking for some BRUTALLY HONEST feedback on my profile and my chances of securing a MBB internship offer. If anyone has done any recruiting at MBB firms your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my background:
* Accepted and about to begin at an M7 MBA program (think Booth, Kellogg, Columbia)
* Seven years of professional experience, all within the corporate finance function of the firm, including:
* Four years in a global fortune 100 healthcare firm (including a corp fin rotational program right out of undergrad)
* Three years at a global fortune 100 luxury goods conglomerate, including promotion to manager and experience with a direct report.
* 730 GMAT (46Q, 44V)
* Leadership experience running a 12 person junior board of a non-profit in NYC, as well as volunteering for 3 years as a mentor to first generation college students
* Undergrad from an average (top 100) state school, GPA 3.87 cumulative, graduated Summa Cum Laude, Major Finance Minor Anthropology
* Leadership in undergrad of founding a student organization that is still in existence today and has grown to one of the top 5 out of 200+ student organizations
Two of my questions/concerns are:
-
While my total gmat score is good, my quant score is a little lower than where I would like it to be. I do have seven years of quantitative work and As in undergrad Calculus. Will this hold me back in recruiting? Is it worth retaking the test and trying to get my quant score up?
-
Will coming from an average state undergrad hold me back? My MBA program definitely helps compensate, but I am under the impression consulting is very focused on pedigree.
Thank you very much for your help!!!
You will be fine - don't be worried. Unless you make some kind of terrible impression on the firms at pre-interview events, you should get interviews for all of MBB.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the words of encouragement. I will do my best at the pre-interview events. Do you have any suggestions on some case interview prep I can do prior to school starting? I have some time over the next few weeks that I would like to leverage if possible.
Assuming you have a decent personality and know how to talk to people, your chances of getting an interview are good. We won't look too deep into GMAT other than the overall score. And your MBA business schools ">M7 pedigree would make up for any concerns about undergrad, which there really wouldn't be any.
Just out of curiosity, how much do you guys care about UG GPA in MBA recruiting? Do candidates from MBA business schools ">M7 get a pass for low UG GPA assuming good GMAT? What about those from T15? Thanks!
We don't really care about UG GPA. MBA business schools ">M7 + good GMAT will get you good looks by the recruiters. Just focus of networking and getting the interviews.
I agree - you should definitely be fine. Your gmat score is decent enough, so no need to worry about it. Quant will be tested again during the cases anyway.
Your undergrad won't hurt you as well - its a nice story of making your way up to MBA business schools ">M7.
Just make sure you have good story on why consulting is something you want to do and you will be fine.
Pretty much anyone at an M7 will have at least a shot at MBB if they do the networking process right and do well on the cases. Even a mediocre gmat score can be made up for with super strong case performance.
Of course, if you had a hard time with the GMAT, you may also have a hard time with cases. The two are reasonably correlated.
Thank you for all the feedback everyone, its very much appreciated. I will update you all in the winter with results.
