Below 700: Definitely retake
700 - 720: Retake if you think you can score higher. If you know yourself and feel like you're tapped out at this level, that's okay. You can still get in with these scores (although less likely)
730+: No need to retake. Anything 750+ is seen as impressive
For HSW, if you're a white/overrepresented minority male, shoot for at least a 750. The overall averages at these schools are around 730, but (assuming you fall into one of these groups) what you should really care about are the averages for other white/overrepresented male applicants from MBB. That average will be higher, although admittedly I do not know if those stats are public anywhere.
HSW is enough of a crapshoot as it is, and landing a 750+ means ruling out the GMAT as a reason for getting dinged when schools compare you against other similar applicants. Even if you get dinged at HSW, a high GMAT greatly increases your odds of landing scholarship money. The time you spend studying and the $ you spend on test prep may well pay for themselves. Good luck to you.
Scored a 740 (Q50 V40) on my last attempt, and just started at MBB. Is it worth taking it again while working, or will the 740 be enough to check the box?
You should more or less be a lock at W and definitely in play at H/S (assuming your GPA is strong). I don't think a higher GMAT will move the needle a ton unless its a 770+
The 740 is probably fine. I'd focus on getting on high impact studies/projects, extracurriculars, etc. over retaking the GMAT if I were you. That said, if you find yourself on the beach or with some other source of free time, retaking won't hurt. MBB is no longer the lock at HSW (especially at H/S) that it was even in the relatively recent past, and you should do whatever you can to advantage your candidacy. The rest of the M7 should be a pretty easy shot for you.
Unrelated to your immediate question, but anecdotally, I've observed that many (maybe most, but can't prove it) successful MBB applicants to HSW didn't apply directly out of MBB, but rather went MBB->other high-profile job->HSW. You should ask yourself what exactly you want to get out of an MBA, what you want to do after b-school, and position your pre-MBA work experience accordingly.
No need to retake.
