Did you have any experience in energy while at MBB?
Debating a lateral move as an experienced hire as a Project Leader is willing to put my resume forward. 5 years of BB IB pre MBA, including renewable developer M&A deals. Graduated during Covid and went off piste building a development arm of an EPC. The operational experience has been invaluable, but business is strapped. Would love to be plugged into strategy within a global platform rather than pigeonholed solely into tactics of project finance / M&A.
Not sure about precedent moves, but there’s certainly a play here. Are you thinking US or globally? MBB skillset would probably lend itself well to an array of different roles at a dev shop, but generally the only roles that’ll have you doing interesting work with competitive comp will be isolated to only a handful of shops (if you’re thinking US-based companies). As you’re probably aware, every developer seems to be organizing their corporate architecture differently, so finding that right role could be tough.
If you’ve got an appetite for the M&A work, then there’s probably a straightforward transition into a director-level role, assuming you’re down to manage DD and negotiations and all that. This really only makes sense at a shop that’s buying (and/or swapping) a lot of projects… but most everyone is doing that so you’re probably good.
Alternatively, at the larger shops you might find a “market strategy” role to be fulfilling. Depends on where you’re looking, but if that’s looking at things from a global perspective then the MBB skills look great. If it’s more focused on regional markets/grids in the US, maybe less applicable, but 100% still viable.
