Mccombs vs Stern
Hi I'm a high school senior who has been accepted both UT Mccombs (Non-honors business) and NYU Stern. I'm confident that I want to do consulting right after college. UT costs my family 30k while NYU would be around 80k. My family is willing to pay that difference but I wanted to know if it's even worth it. Both programs are tied in national rankings in business. I like Austin but nothing can beat New York. UT lets me be more comfortable having a car (in state), nicer dorm, knowing some friends going, etc while NYU is completely new to me and far from home. What worries me about UT is how hurt my chances are of being recruited into the big consulting firms like Bain are because of the fact that I'm not in the business honors program. Those companies seem to look at the honors kids first before the rest of McCombs people, leaving little space for regular McCombs. Do you believe the difference is worth it between the two schools. I cant choose one.
I would normally go with Stern here, but I don't think it's worth 200k more than UT (which is still very solid, even without the business honors program).
I broke into MBB through UT McCombs non-BHP, its definitely possible but requires networking and some legwork compared to BHP. I didn't know I wanted to do consulting until pretty late in college but because you do, join clubs like USIT, MCA, CYC, they all look great for consulting. Texas Blazers, a professional org, has a lot of consulting alumni as well.
UTA is a target for southern MBB offices and NYU Stern is not a target at the undergrad level. I'd say go with UTA here, especially with the much cheaper price tag.
