McKinsey Implementation Associate
Hi all,
I am considering the McKinsey Associate-Implementation role and was wondering what some of the exit opportunities would be. I know its more of an operations vs. strategy role, but I hear MI (Mck Implementation) folks getting staffed on the same projects and generalists.
Do you think this job could lead to looks at PE down the road?
Thanks!
Aligning with any practice at McKinsey means you are saying you want to do around half of your work in that industry (it could easily be less if you decide you don't want to do as much implementation work, nobody is keeping track). You can do as much generalist work as you want.
It is equally as competitive to get into, since your case interview is typically still just generalist topics. The "Implementation" label is more of a branding thing for the firm -- nobody cares about it internally, and you don't have to share it when you apply for exit opportunities. It's not a meaningful title, and as someone else shared on this forum, nobody knows to ask for it anyway. You can do as much generalist work as you want so nobody would have any clue what practice you were aligned to (but also it doesn't matter).
There's no downside for exit opportunities or opportunities while you're at the firm (people don't even know what practice you're in unless you tell them). However, if you don't actually want to do implementation work, you should just be a generalist, which is just as competitive.
Awesome thanks for the insight. So if I join in MI, I can still network my way to get staffed to strategy work?
The main reason I'm applying for MI is because I'm an industry-hire, not getting my MBA just yet.
Yes, you'll have access to the same pool of generalist work as everyone else. Similar to people aligning with even Digital (the firm's biggest focus right now), and others like Marketing & Sales, etc.
