Mckinsey PEI interview?
Hello,
I have an upcoming PEI interview with Mckinsey and I am wondering how it is structured.
I am aware that the traits they are looking for are: Leadership, Entrepreneurial drive, and Personal Impact. I am aware for an individual interview they will focus on one of the traits. My questions is how would they go about asking the questions, do they ask what is a time you demonstrated "Leadership". Or is the question more specific? Any advice or what can I expect?
Sorry irrelevant to the question but congratulations on getting the interview! Do you mind sharing when did you apply and when you heard back?
Congrats on the interview! During my interviews, McK NE, I was asked in R1 about "demonstrating inclusive leadership in a diverse team (experience, background, age, personality, culture, ethnicity, nationality, etc.). My other question was "tell me about the time you experienced a conflict on a team and how you resolved it". For the round two, I got these two questions again, nearly identical wording. For the third question about ED, I was asked about meeting a big deadline and challenges I had faced but many of my case partners were asked directly about challenging situation and showing initiative. I think what is important is to just communicate, if it is not clear just ask. I had a 30-60sec pitch version of my stories ready that I shared with my interviewers to confirm that this is a good story; they seemed happy about this. In my experience, no matter which dimensions/story, you should always demonstrate empathy/understanding of others and their strengths/weaknesses/drives, and be able to resolve conflict/challenge/deadline/demotivated team member by tailoring your approach and communication style. At least, this was my experience and it has worked successfully for me :) good luck!
When you gave the 60-second pitch, did you verbally say that it was a shortened version? Or just go right into it, and then wait for your interviewer to make any comments or give follow-up questions to expand on it?
I can remember exact details but I think I said something like "I have an example in mind; it is about the time when I was XX (mini context), and there was this issue YZ, and the project couldn't progress, and I had and idea found a solution. Does it sound good?". The point is to give them (1) a chance to tell you in case you mixing up leadership and conflict story (happens quite a bit since there is so much overlap; not a big deal but it sucks to waste 10min before realising that this is not what they want to hear), and (2) it helps you to keep the story going in the direction you want when you dive deeper.
Everything Bonoba said is the same as my experience (except the specific questions asked). On top of that, you can go above and beyond by incorporating all three elements (personal impact, leadership, entrepreneurial drive) into your stories. Each interviewer only gets one story, but they want to see you demonstrate all the skills you need to progress, right? This means weaving in different types of actions are important.
I used a really helpful ebook that I can share - feel free to message me for it.
Hi tash, thank you for your reply! I'm interested in the e-book too. Do you mind me DM you as well?
I don't mind, feel free to contact me! Best of luck with your prep.
