Mechanical Keyboards
Is anyone here that prefers mech keyboard over the membrane Dell ones or Terminals handed at work?. Okay like the terminal keyboard is cool to have on your desk and sleek. But after a while membrane keyboards really fuck you up. Mechanical keyboards are way way much more soothing and relaxing to type on. I am not talking about those generic gamer keyboard. I am talking about quality keyboards with switches that feels good to type on like those old IBMs and Mitsubishi (Holy Pandas, Linear, Tactile Kailhs, Noble Yellows).
I built several keebs over the years, two more during WFH in the last 18 months. Mechanical is the way to go for the ultimate typing feel, customization, etc. You can have whatever you want. One colleague even built his own custom bloomberg terminal keeb, but there are few things that don't work around their login/credential/ID solutions.
Currently typing this on alu gasket frame, holy pandas, custom retooled black stems, krytox, GMK caps.
My honest opinion would be to build your own mech keeb even though wireless mech PCBs are not plentiful.
If a beginner reads this but doesn't want to build one, I'd order one of the following

Anne Pro 2

Keychron K2

Why Keychron? I suggest the new Logitech slim line. Bro how do I make a keyboard like Tfue with the metal back? And btw since you are a pro. I don’t understand why is the need for the 5 pin connector (is it for aesthetic or it’s better than wires?). And wtfeck custom BBG mechs that’s cool asf got any pics?
The amount of pins depends on your PCB. Some allow 5 pin, some only 3.
5 pin are more stable, people say. I have had both and don't see a huge difference.
Note: If you only use 3pin switches you must use a plate for rigidity. If you are using 5 pin switches you may be able to build a keeb without a plate. But I have 5pins with a carbon fiber plate and it is fairly robust.
If you are vaccinated go to a keeb meetup (if available in your region) and check out all the variants. Building my very first keeb was difficult years back, but once you get the hang of it you are fine.
Also, for the better feature set of QMK you'll need to code a little bit. (standard features are fine without coding, the configurator does everything)
thockiest sounds IMO wood/PC/acrylic case, SA PBT caps, krytox lube, zeal stabs, modified stems and filmed. Plate depends on taste, steel has a slight tin, carbon fiber is more clacky, alu sounds ok too.
The Hammond B-3 is a classic keyboard choice, but it's electric.
I've tried most popular mechanical keyboard switches. I vastly prefer Topre switches to any others, they're quiet and have a great feel for typing. Currently using a CoolerMaster Novatouch with a Norbatouch case and GMK keycaps, I don't think they make these boards anymore though. Nice mechanical keyboards range from around $150 to $700 depending on the customization and type of case/keycaps/switches you want. I would recommend r/mechanicalkeyboards to learn more about different types and r/mechmarket is where I've always bought and sold. Another personal favorite are the old apple mechanical keyboards, typing on those feels like nothing else that's still made, people rebuild these using new parts and keep the old apple switches.
If you want the best keyboard for bringing into work that's quiet, portable, not too flashy, and nice to type on, I would get a HHKB --> https://happyhackingkb.com/
are pandas the holy grail mother of all switches? what about noble yellows?
I love keyboards. Mechanical is the way to go and PBT are my favorite keycaps.
For work I have a leopold which I think feels the best and also a ducky which for me looks
the best.
I’ve tried brown ,silver, red, and blue switches. Brown was the best for typing because with silver and red I made way too many mistakes due to sensitivity (and blue is way too loud). Though note after hours of typing on brown my fingers eventually get a little tired due to the force needed for key activation.
check out the new logitech g915 g815 line
Nvm I take that back. Logitech G PRO and my G815 has blue LED errors.
Some people don't like the complexity or price point, membrane keyboards work fine for most regular users.
its a bot you tard.
I have a Daskeyboard Prime 13 at the office and a Logitech G413 Carbon at home, both with Cherry MX Brown switches. I really appreciate the backlighting when working late at night.
same. was thinking gonna go for that top gun keycap set with a gmmk or g pro but realise there is gonna be no backlit. sometimes i cant stand looking at the monitor and having the lamp on. distracting asf
Love mechanical keyboards but had to change to quieter switches because my girlfriend wanted to kill me
you in love with the blue huh? ngl i love alone. rocking glorious panda (imo upgrade from holys) if i am feeling very modest or box navy most of the time if i am feeling jumpy
Listen mate you're never going to get good at csgo without a mechanical keyboard and a good gaming chair. I'd recommend anything Corsair.
I use a Logitech for now. But man I thought they were good like back in the days. Now the blue LED on my G PRO and G815 just had this error where it can't fully display teal or any colour properly that has a blue RGB value. Trying to find a 1800/96 custom keys layout so I get the numpad for work too.
Can't go wrong with Keychron K4
I love Ducky. Nothing cool going on but sturdy, reliable and satisfying to type on. I have an extension keypad I bought recently that has been really helpful too for various shortcuts.
What extension pads do you use? I use a Logitech full size keeb G815. But the one of the LED suffered error as all logitech keeb products. I am trying to find a 1800/96 layout atm to build a custom since I really need that numpad. It just feels better to have those keys and on my Logitech there is macro keys which I bind for stuff at work. Cannot live without numpad and these G keys.
I personally find them unbearable to listen to
There are offices which forbid mechanical keyboards because they don't meet the noise ceiling set for desk work/office environments.
Some of them can be really loud and I don't think those should be used in a public setting at all (office, library, college, etc.)
Even the fairly silent mech ones I built are louder than a membrane keyboard.
thock thock thock clic clic clic clic clic
Not mechanical but I like Topre.
How does it feel?
Once you go mechanical you cant go back. Got used to using cherry blues and browns now I hate my kb at work lmao
