Medicine to PE

I graduated from NYU Stern undergrad about 2 years ago and have been doing research at some top institutions while getting ready to apply to medical school. I am applying now and would matriculate in Fall 2020.

However, I am having second thoughts about this - I realized I've been idealizing medicine and have been hard-headed about changing paths (I don't like to give up!). My gut is telling me to at least try something finance-related before committing the rest of my life to a field.

I have a year before potentially starting medical school, is it possible/worth it it to try and score an internship of sorts at some boutique IB or small PE firm for a couple months? If it is something I like, could I do CFA(s) + a modelling course and potentially get a full-time job somewhere - or would I have to apply to an MBA or MSF program to break in?

PE will probably be tough but you might find a healthcare IB group that will take you. If you have a Stern undergrad degree you're already qualified so there should be no need to do additional coursework (not now, maybe not ever).

But speaking of idealizing career options, my bet is that after a few months in IB you'll be dead set on medical school. One other thing to research in the meantime: Career options for MDs outside of the traditional practice of medicine. There are a lot of them, almost all very interesting and lucrative.

For London, Blackstone posted an opening earlier this year for their life sciences platform where they specifically wanted candidates who were doctors or had a phd in a very specific branch of bio / chemistry. This pretty much narrowed the pool of applicants down to 8-10 people I can imagine: doctor + wanting to switch to PE
