mergers and aquisitions vs corprate finance
Which of these are better in terms of pay, hours and general work environment. i know all of these may depend on where you work and whether the firm is a bulge or not, but im just looking for some general responses here.
thanks
...M&A is corprate finance.
I think he's talkin about financING....not sure tho
M&A falls within corporate finance...
M&A bankers work longer hours than other product/industry groups (in general). M&A is more prestigious (again, in general) and sexier to outsiders.
corporate finance is the industry with several type of work and specialisations involved these are 1) M&A 2) restructuring 3) Takeover defence 4) IPO and trade sales 5) General valuations
M&A is like another word for Corp Fin. I like to use the word Corp Fin cos it captures more things.
Its like saying, I am an accountant, rather than I am a tax specialist
So within Corp. Fin.,
Do people specialize within each of these tasks or they specialize according to industry groups?
Also, what kind of work mainly constitutes as restructuring?
ziggymon:
Q1: It depends.
Q2: Here is an example of a restructuring unit and their marketing pitch: http://www.hlhz.com/main.asp?p=CORP_FinancialResturcturingOverview
I have a question relating to this, but specifically about HLHZ.
I have been told that it is split into three areas: corporate finance, Restructuring (best area from what I've heard), and Financial Advisory.
I have a superday next weekend and will be meeting with people in CF, Healthcare Industry Group, and FA. I'm not interested in FA, but I am guessing that M&A would fall under CF in this case, am I right? Also, I know that restructuring is thought of as the best part of HLHZ, but does anyone know much about Healthcare or CF there?
Thanks
Where is your superday? New York? Chicago?
Chicago
...pure boutique?
I'm going to a superday in Chicago on Friday... I'm not aware that HLHZ has a strong healthcare practice in Chicago.
HLHZ is a middle market bank.
Back to the original question (I'm so over the HLLZ posts) I would suggest you find out how each bank views it as its not the same. Mostly, as Wasting Time said, corp fin = M&A, but I have heard of shops where corp fin literally means just that: [phone rings, you pick up] "hello...what's that you say? $10 million? ummmm, ok - do you want that in $5 or $10 notes?". You do NOT want to be in corporate finance in some places.
