Metal Thread

I've gotten into metal. Let's recommend metal to each other.

Especially interested in Russian/ukrainian and Japenese bands if you know of some

Have you listened to the classic stuff? Kill'em All, Ride the Lightening, Master of Puppets, And Justice for All = GOAT albums

Great, great stuff all around. Thrash metal is the gateway drug for the entire rich universe of metal that the genre has to offer! Have you seen Metallica in concert? I really dig Hardwired, believe it or not.

I unfortunately have never seen them live. None of my friends nor my wife wanted to come with me to see them at Gillette last year :(

I don't mind Hardwired at all, although it is crazy (and understandable) how much Hetfield's voice has changed over the years.

Also Olaf has some bangers:

If it helps, my all-time favorites going back to high school have been Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and anything involving Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Sabbath, Dio, Heaven and Hell). As others have said, it's hard to have a better starting point than that!

In Flames. The whole discography. Every single song from their old albums is a masterpiece, they evolved their style over time but they're still great imho. Love how creative and original they are, and what superb melodies they come up with in each of their works. By the way I saw them live 3 weeks ago and I highly recommend going to one of their concerts, they just put so much heart and passion into their live performances.

From the one you mentioned, I think Moonshield might very well be the best metal song ever written (always imho). Then Whoracle, Colony, and finally what I consider to be the absolute peak of their career: Clayman. After such masterpieces (each so different from the previous ones!) I can see why many fans are disappointed today... But come on, they're humans and that level of inspiration is not limitless. However, I'm glad they evolved their style rather than just repeating themselves over and over again, possibly writing copies of their old albums. Okay Jesper is not one of them anymore but they still have a lot of fun playing their new (still good) music and you can feel the energy from their lives. Btw they're still playing some old songs including Moonshield and The Jester's Dance ;) I will always be a fan of this band.

I guess it depends on the type of metal you want to rock out to. For me, I am a huge fan of death metal.

Bloodbath is my all-time favorite. It was Mikael Akerfeldt's (Opeths vocals) super band side project. He did vocals on the Resurrection Through Carnage (Cry My Name is a solid song) album and then Peter Tatgren (Hypocrisy) did vocals for Nightmares Made Flesh. Eaten is kind of their anthem song on that album.

You can never go wrong with Cannibal Corpse either.

Necrophagist is an amazing tech-death band... but they have not produced new music in a long time, unfortunately. Both of their albums are sick.

But really, if you want just some amazing metal: Slayer, Meshuggah, Grimfist, Both of In The Flesh's recommendations, Testament, At The Gates, and Gojira (I actually enjoy their new music just as much as their old stuff). The list can go on and on. The search for good metal never ends! \m/

Always nice to hear from another death retailer! Seconded anything by cannibal corpse and necrophagist.

Morbid Angel too! Did you get Kingdoms Disdained? Sounds like a much needed return to form.

Not a Japanese band, but a Finnish group that does Japanese flair/influence.

These guys are from North Carolina and are criminally, criminally unknown.

They've tourned with Alestorm too. Christopher Bowes did some guest vocals on this track.

And if you like longer epic songs.

Also good.

I was gonna mention Whispered but ya beat me to It! GoldenCinderblock when you say "Japanese bands do you mean bands that "sound" Japanese or east Asian? Or just great Japanese bands in General?

For the Russian and eastern European connection, Also try alkonost, skyforger, drudkh, and amorphis.

Avenged Sevenfold - Hail To The King, favorite pre-workout song.

Five Finger Death Punch, Iron Maiden [I listen to this in my sleep it makes me sleepy now haha], Metallica, SlipKnot, Korn, Judas Priest are also good, but depends on your taste.

Agree with Whitecollarandsuspenders, try the GOAT albums first.

Start with the big names/essentials from all the subgenres and then work your way outwards from there. I suggest using the metal-archives (https://www.metal-archives.com ) as a resource and to discover new bands (their "Similar Artists" tab is a great way to find new bands that are similar to ones you already know). The list below is far from comprehensive and pretty much only covers a lot of the big names/notable acts in each of the subgenres.

Traditional heavy metal essentials:

  • Early stuff from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Running Wild, Helloween, Accept,

  • Others to check out: Liege Lord, Manilla Road, Agent Steel, Blind Guardian, Grave Digger

Thrash metal essentials:

  • The classic albums from the Big Four (first four Metallica albums, first five Megadeth, first four Slayer, early Anthrax)

  • German thrash: Kreator, Sodom, Destruction

  • Others to check out: Metal Church, Dark Angel, Demolition Hammer, Morbid Saint, Sadus, early Sepultura.

Death metal essentials:

  • Florida death metal: Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary, Malevolent Creation

  • Swedish death metal: Entombed, Dismember, Grave

  • New York death metal: Incantation, Immolation, Suffocation, Pyrexia

  • Others to check out: Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Devourment

Black metal essentials (your mileage may vary here; many people find black metal and its derivatives the most difficult to get into):

  • Norwegian black metal: Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, Gorgoroth

  • Swedish black metal: Marduk, Funeral Mist, Dissection, Malign, Watain

  • Finnish black metal: Impaled Nazarene, Beherit, Horna, Sargeist, Archgoat

  • Others: Blasphemy, Conqueror, Revenge, Absu, Black Witchery, Leviathan, Mutiilation, Antaeus

Doom/Sludge essentials:

  • O.G. doom: Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Witchfinder General

  • Stoner/occult doom: Sleep, Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Acid King, High on Fire

  • Sludge: Eyehategod, Grief, Crowbar, Acid Bath, Down

There are tons of other bands/classifications/subgenres, but there's enough here to keep you busy for awhile and to get you acquainted with some of the different sounds that are out there.

I dig a lot of the names mentioned above, but I'd also recommend some prog metal/djent for something different and the excellent guitar work. Try Veil of Maya (False Idol and old stuff), Periphery, Animals as Leaders (song Cafo is unreal), Between the Buried and Me (Colors and Coma Ecliptic), Born of Osiris, Protest the Hero, The Human Abstract, The Contortionist and Erra.

For some European flair, I second In Flames and also recommend Architects and SikTh (UK), Meshuggah and Soilwork (Swedish), Children of Bodom (Finnish) and Gojira (French).

Opeth is super solid. I only started to listen to them due to Mikael's Bloodbath side project. I absolutely love how he could sing you a lullaby to fall asleep or let loose a guttural growl that could eviscerate any mortal. Cov, you totally nailed their good albums, with exception of missing Blackwater Park and Damnation. I don't appreciate their latest albums.

Just my opinion of course... Damnation is fantastic but not quite on the level of those others. On a related note, I had a long flight the other day and listened to Watershed from end to end. That one is quite good, too. Burden is one of their very best clean tracks. In the end, I felt the need to draw the line somewhere haha.

I'm actually somewhat of a fan of their last three albums, just not to the same degree as with their earlier stuff.

I love all sorts of music, hip hop, jazz, classical. But the metal bug bit me hard. My first rock concert was Judas Priest at Madison Square Garden, 1983, where they received a lifetime ban based on the behavior of their fans. Whut? It wasn't me! ;)

Judas Priest, Motorhead, Metallica, Sabbath, Faith No More, Sevendust, Engage Killswitch, Opeth, Death, King Crimson, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Chevelle, Dio, Black Label Society, Skindred... not enough hours in the day to play all that I love plus also hunt down new bands.

I recommend checking out Opeth:

and Skindred:
