MF PE vs SM HF Career Prospects/Earnings

In the "benchmarking mf umm pe base salaries" thread, someone said

A VP might have $1-5m carry - over vesting period that's $200-250k / year to $1-1.25m / year.

A Principal / Director might have $5-20m carry - over vesting period that's $1-1.25m / year to $4-5m / year

A Partner / MD might have $10-50m carry - over vesting period that's $2-2.5m / year to $10-12.5m a year.

Plus cash comp of VP $300k to $600k, Principal / Director $500k to $1m, Partner / MD $800k to $2m

Sounds like a very nice career if you can stick it out...It seems like only a tiger global type HF could only maybe top that. Comp/Prospects wise, Thoughts?

What are you trying to understand? There are so many of these posts, and let’s be clear, ANY job where you are at the top of the field will pay a ton. No, it isn’t just tiger cubs that will pay that much in the HF space, there are many other funds where partners make that sort of cash, you just don’t hear about them. But at the end of the day, ALL of these jobs are incredibly hard to get, please don’t make any career decisions based on what partners get paid, it isn’t reasonable. Go into a career you enjoy, you’ll be better off.
