Mid-Career change
Greetings,
Am a middle-aged college prof. looking to get into research analysis. Need advice on the steps to make the career move. Should I take and pass some of the FINRA exams like Series 66 to show prospective brokerages my motivation? Which types of brokerages are more open to middle-age workers? Any feedback and advice appreciated.
You can't take any finra exams unless you're sponsored by a company. I do not know if colleges can sponsor people or not, but you could look into that.
The CFA exam is the professional license of choice for people in research. You could start preparing for that. Passing it won't guarantee that you get a job in research but it won't hurt. You do not need to be working in finance to take the exam but there is a work experience requirement for actually obtaining the license once all of the exams are passed.
Maybe you could audit some high level classes through your college for free? Perhaps put those on your resume.
I'd also go to some fund raising events that the college throws and get in the ears of some donors in finance and build your network. Ask to hear their story. Hundreds of threads on this - just do a search.
Typically people get research roles through on campus recruiting at the undergrad or MBA level. Maybe consider getting an MBA?
These are just some ideas off the top of my head. Good luck with the search and let us know how it goes.
No idea about the middle age worker thing.
