Midlife Crisis 30-year-old. How Possible to break into banking

Hello WSO community,

I am getting 30 this year and I would like to reflect what I did in the past and what I want to head in the next decade or my life.

My background: (Chronicle order)

  • Bachelor in Law and Economics in my home country
  • 2 years top Fortune 500 management trainee program
  • 1 year lawyer focus on corporate litigations home country
  • Pre-master internship in iBanking, two internships in Private Equity located home country and NYC
  • Ivy League school master with focus on economic, policy and finance.
  • 1 Year Corporate financial analyst in a mortgage company n USA (sponsor issues which I have to leave)
  • Work at trader in semiconductor industry which I traded semiconductors (Has my H1B now)  Taking CFA level 3 this June

I was thinking about going to law school because I thought big law easier give sponsorship, work as few years m&a or banking lawyer and you can move to private equity side or transaction service. Also I can leverage my home country bar.  After I discussed with my friends and mentor both in law and finance, but I dropped this idea now even I had been studying LSAT for half year.

So I am reconsidering the choice. I want to set the private equity is my ultimate goal, what should I take. Should I just take MBA instead or I can just try to move to another job closer to investment side? I know my experience is really divisive, but I believe every steps I did is not in vain.

MBA maybe more straightforward, but 2 years costs time and money. Also is that easier for foreigners to get sponsored even in investment banking or financial advisory? Since I have to compete with Americans here, here not sure I have the chance.

Moving towards ladders by changing jobs: Not sure what I can shift towards? Equity research? or corporate development ?

Thank you and I would be really appreciated if some one could give me some hints.
