Mind over Matter

Does anyone in IBD have a passion besides finance that gets them through the toughest days/weeks. For example, many young professionals train for marathons or committed to working out and general fitness. However, it seems that all secondary hobbies must be totally eliminated to survive the analyst years. I labeled the thread "mind over matter" because I believe that if you are happy/satisfied mentally, your work will be of higher caliber and reflect your "inner peace". So, can anyone relate?

Where I live, many young professionals play rugby, it is not only a sport but a social event. Golf is popular also.

Older guys just play for a few minutes but they keep involved with the team

Yeah, I was going to go for the "inner peace" thing, along with the working out and general fitness. I told myself that an hour in the gym was worth two hours of sleep (which it is, unless you've been getting two hours a night for the past month). In my past I've been generally good at mind over matter, at least where physical pain and stamina are involved. My inner peace lasted all through training, through about three 100+ hour weeks... and then it went to hell in a handbasket, along with the respective inner peace of most of my fellow first-years.

I think that mind over matter can be very valuable on good weeks. On bad weeks, you should be prepared for the fact that nothing will help you.

Oh man, you guys have transferred it over to this thread as well...

Personally, I like being able to come home after a long day and read. It is a good hobby to have in banking because you can pick up and put down a book at any time. It doesn't cost much (one night of drinking vs. a month of reading ...) and you don't need to find a bunch of other people who want to do it too to enjoy it. Granted, it isn't a social activity, but I'm with people nearly every other waking minute, so I don't feel like I'm missing out.

Just remember, Comp -- he came over and trolled me with death threats on a thread to which I was contributing.

I agree with the reading. I can't handle socializing at the end of a long day -- I need quiet. I don't think it makes you any less of a social person; just a balanced one. And it doesn't end in hangovers.

What's the matter Ind ? Did I hurt your feelings ? Lol, if this much trash talking gets under your skin, how will you hold up in a fight lol ? You'll be bawling even before I put a hand on you.

By the way, it wasn't a death threat, don't put your spin on it and try to make me look like a maniac. I said it would be fight to the death to which you have agreed.

Seanc, trash talking about how badly you will beat someone up is pretty poor form unless you're willing to back it up, online or off, girl or boy. I've been ready for quite some time and haven't heard word one from you about setting it up... except for your excuses. This is the kind of stuff that punk kids try to pull on the streets until they get curbstomped.

You're talking about slaying me; I'm refusing to make the same threat regarding you. That's known as threatening to kill somebody. You may not want to look like a maniac, but you're acting like a maniac, dude, saying you want me humbled and fired, saying you want me dead. If there are any gentlemen on this forum, they're aghast at you, and if there are any martial artists, they're laughing. I think there's a little too much crack on your cornflakes, m'dear.

ooh tough talk, did I hit a nerve Ind ? Threatening to curbstomp a man twice your size, If I'm on crack what the hell are you on ? Just finish watching American History X babe ?, or did you learn that on the mean streets of ATL ? Why don't you fly out to NYC if you're so eager, we can work on that aggression and christen my new sheets at the same time.

Slaying, in my book, is also a euphemism for "banging" , thats why I said "a broad like Mis Ind", meaning I've bedded chicks like you.

I doubt there are any martial-artists on this board Ind, and the Gentlemen, well they stopped paying attention to you a long time ago, I think we both know that.

Now stop the tough talk babe, you're making me aroused lol.

STFU.

Anyway, back to the topic. Cycling. Low impact, is better at the times of day an analyst gets out and is scalable.

Where I live cycling is insane...locals do it but i wouldn´t dare...

I like rollerblading (low Impact too), but again, there are so few places where I can do it.
