Mindfulness and meditation book?
Hi guys:
Do you have any favorite mindfulness or meditation book that you would recommend? I often spend a lot of my time worrying about the worst situations (came from a family with one parent and a lot to worry about in life in terms of future and money), and now working in PE isn't really helping with that - I often spend a lot of time thinking about every interaction and worry that I will be screwed at work or people hate me.
Booking a therapist too, but wondering if anyone has any books/online programs they've liked. Thanks!
the mind illuminated by caludasa is the best “how to” guide you’ll find. for general mindfulness, the power of now is good. some of the stuff in the book gets pretty out there but overall it’s solid
Siddartha - Herman Hesse
Great rec! One of my personal favorites
Tony Robbins.
10% happier and Breath. both are fantastic. 10% happier will be more relevant given the anecdotes.
Peace is Every Step- Thich Nhat Hanh
any other monks you enjoy?
10% Happier and The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfullness are great starting points.
They're both great introductions for westerners that don't get too deep into the more "out there" parts.
I would download the app headspace, covers meditation in all different aspects. It in essence allows you calm your mind.
Meditation is addictive. It is possible, that once you get deeper into meditation, that you just want to throw your life away, have no interest in society, and go to an extreme. That is totally wrong. If you read the scriptures or books on meditation, you will see how much they emphasize the importance of having balance and harmony in one's own life, not neglecting your own body, or duties. So self-righteous meditator who screws up their own life can happen.
The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle
Search Inside Yourself is a mindfulness program developed at Google by early Google engineer, Chade-Meng Tan (Meng). He has a book out by the same name describing it, I also think you can take the course online. Here is his Google Talk on the subject:
Not necessarily the same genre but Extreme Ownership x Jocko Willink & Leif Babin. I don’t think the book is anywhere as close to good as Jocko’s podcast, but it’s much shorter than the 100+ hours of Jocko I’ve listened to.
You’re a successful businessman - your mind is attacking itself. I know what you’re talking about in terms of overthinking and stressing over stuff that actually doesn’t exist in reality. Good luck
Personally meditation was not as helpful for me as I had hoped (Not calling it useless, just saying my piece). I recommend the Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler as it teaches you how to logically work through problems, controllable variables, etc. The discussion is geared toward poker but I found the concepts universally applicable. I think Jared Tendler wrote a trading book as well if you want something that is in finance terms (at least more so than poker). I also encourage you to try guided meditation or getting a hobby. Personally I find focus on a hobby for fun more healing that trying to focus on my breathing in meditation. I still meditate each night but for different reasons.
