Minor in Operations Research and Management Science??

Hi All,

I am an undergrad at Cornell's Dyson School concentrating in Finance and Business Analytics and minoring in computer science. However, there is another minor I was thinking about doing: Operations Research and Management Science (see below link). It seems to have applications across the board including finance because it is modeling heavy.

Does anyone know if this could be an asset for me when I'm looking for jobs in a few years? Anyone have experience in the field?

Cheers

Operations Research tends to lend itself to data science and analytics and it might pair well with the major and minor you have already chosen. However, minors aren't generally intensive enough to be seriously considered among employers and it's a positive thing to have but not a huge negative to not have. I'm not sure of your course load but focusing on your current courses, not overloading and getting a high GPA is usually much better. Considering that you're posting in WSO and I saw this in the IB forum, if you're thinking of going to IB, your major and minor are good for proving that you've got a brain on your shoulders and little else.

Well, that's a good point about course load. One of the primary things that I appreciate about it is the emphasis on higher maths. For business analytics, finance, and comp sci all you need to take is Calc 1. With ORMS I would take multi and linalg.

I'm going to honest here, higher maths is good for engineering and the sciences, perhaps to some degree, economics. I would recommend a higher GPA over any possible course you can take. GPA is forever and a low one will haunt you until you have a stable job. I'm still not sure what job you're looking for, but again for IB, this is especially true and a low GPA will hurt more often than any benefit from potential "soft skills". Inevitably, a few extra courses here there will have an impact on your grades.

In terms of looking for a job, the best path would be to get some relevant work experience behind you and some leadership or teamwork roles. PM me if you have any more questions about majors / OR / IB.
