Financial Services with a Misdemeanor Record
Similar questions have been asked. None are directly relevant to my situation. I expect to run into issues along the way, know overall persistence and developing a solid track record is key. However, after 2 rounds of extremely positive interviews, loving the company and the people I've met...The offer is off the table.
I have a few misdemeanors from a 7 years ago. Resisting arrest and unlicensed firearm possession (moved from out of state.) The prosecutor demanded I dotime. Did 2 years, during which I read as much as possible, mastering Economics textbooks. From there proceeded to wrapping up my Bachelors Degree. The state where I live, doesn't allow expungment. The convictions can be sealed within a matter of months....at a significant cost.
Should I just avoid the financial industry altogether? Most all job openings in my city, are by financial firms. I work in the technology sector.
I'm asking to be strategic in my efforts. Any advice is appreciated.
Nope. I know a guy at a small PE firm who got arrested for public intoxication, and another guy in IB who jumped out of a window while drinking underage and then started attacking the EMTs when he woke up.

How bad does a misdemeanor hurt your chances in IB? Even if it is likely to be dismissed and expunged
What do you have? I had one, but either it didn't show up on my background check or my firm didn't care. Typically if it is something non-violent and not related to theft you are good.
Applying for Internships with Misdemeanor Marijuana charge (Originally Posted: 08/15/2017)
Hello All:
I'm in a really low place right now. I have worked my tail off my entire life to get to where I am at today as a honors student but I feel like I have thrown it all away. I'm 21 and I go to the University of Georgia with a 3.5 gpa. I have never been in legal trouble my whole life, but this summer I was arrested for a misdemeanor marijuana charge (the police report priced it as $1, it was half a gram of weed). My face is on the internet and they put me on a 6 month probation period.
This all happened while I was interning as a business analysts at one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world. I have one more summer to go before my senior year, and I was targeting to intern at a big four firm in Atlanta this summer. I was on track too do so as my resume was continuing to improve and build but now with this on my record I have a tough decision to make and advice to ask.
Under Georgia's first offender act after six months when probation ends I will be conditionally discharged. The crime will never go as a "conviction" on my record however in this six month period it will show on background checks. This being a pivotal fall recruiting season, I have to make the decision of whether or not I should apply to firms this fall and explain to them my situation or if I should wait until next year where this whole ordeal won't be public on my record. If companies see this will they be turned off? Should I maybe study abroad this summer instead and avoid having these companies see this?
What do you guys think? I know this is a lot and long winded but I am in a stick situation. I would love some advice. Maybe I should apply to smaller firms just to test the waters?
Misdemeanor Charge for Trespassing... Need Help (Originally Posted: 07/16/2016)

they ask you about it after they make the offer (at BBs anyway)
Not a big deal. As long as it's not a felony or something related to like larceny, you should be fine.
And @ above comment - if I recall, JPM asks on their application, but even after disclosing my misdemeanor charge they still invited me in for interviews
same then after I was made an offer I had to explain the charges in their 'due dilligience'
Depends on bank. Some banks make you disclose arrests. Also sometimes the regulators care more than the banks (depending on where you are)
Suspended License/Misdemeanor (Originally Posted: 04/13/2007)
I will be a summer intern at a BB this summer. I have a question concerning two things and how relevant they are to the background check.
1.) Last year in college, after our team won a game in over time, everyone in my house spilled out into the streets. The neighbors complained and the cops arrested 17 of us for "disorderly conduct", a misdemeanor. (I don't know if it was an official arrest, but we got fingerprinted and had to pay a $20 fine.)
2.) I had a speeding ticket last summer, and didn't mail my payment in on time, so my license was temporarily suspended (from the deadline until they recieved the payment and put it on the books).
Obviously, I don't think they will rescind me for these infractions, but will this ding me in terms of getting the full time offer? Does stuff like this matter when they decide who to offer? Should I try and get it expunged? I'd really like to hear everyone's opinion/advice, so please fire away. Thanks so much.
I don't know if they really give a crap about misdemeanors and minor stuff like that as long as it's not related to securities or any type of financial crime. It's banking not the monestary, I'm sure plenty of these cats got into all kinds of shenanigans back in their college days. Any one know for sure if they care about this minor stuff?
If it shows up on your background check, I can't see how this won't be factored in when deciding offers.
The problem is that it will reflect poorly on your level of maturity and lack of judgment.
I understand your point, anonymo, but does HR really have that much pull in deciding who gets a full-time offer? They're the ones who will see your BR Check, the bankers are the ones who will see your performance, does HR really trump the actual bankers in deciding who gets the offer?
HR has very little say concerning who gets an offer, but I'm pretty sure your background check will be done before you start your internship. So if anything, they'll rescind your SA offer.
GQ, do you really think they would rescind the dude's offer for a misdeamor? and a "disorderly conduct" misdemeanor at that? Like Paulsonator said, this is Wall Street, not the Vatican bro.
Sorry, I was misunderstood. I don't think they'll rescind the offer. I agree with Paulsonator, I think you'd find plenty of people in banking with misdemeanors and other minor infractions. (I have one). The original poster was asking how it would affect him getting the full time offer, and my point was if HR was going to do anything about it, they'd probably take away the internship. They're not going to let you start working, and then not give you an offer because of a misdemeanor.
Regarding the full time offer question: it really depends on your company's policies, but I agree with the others that a misdemeanor shouldn't affect your chances of getting a full time offer. And either way, you need to perform well over the course of your internship, and there's not much you can do about it now. So don't worry too much about it.
However, you might want to check to see if your misdemeanor charge stays on your record permanently. If it does, make sure you don't answer "no" to the "have you ever been arrested for any crime" or any such question when applying for jobs in the future. Otherwise you'd be lying, and they always ding people for that.
did you get the job?
Disclosing Misdemeanor (Originally Posted: 03/07/2016)
I unfortunately was charged with a misdemeanor after I received an offer. The case is still pending. Should I disclose the misdemeanor even if they didn't ask for it in the disclosure form? Or is this making a big deal out of something they didn't ask for (or may not care about)? Also, how long after you accepted the offer/granted approval to run a background does the company take to run the actual background?
When they ask, you tell. If they don't ask, you don't tell.
You are not required to disclose every negative thing about yourself. You probably didn't tell them about the time you pissed your pants in Kindergarten, did you?
When in doubt, disclose. But mostly it depends on what it is. If it's a reportable offense (meaning a misdemeanor dealing with any sort of fraud/dishonesty/theft/etc) then you have to because Finra will have to know. If it's public drunkenness, you should still disclose, but it won't matter.
What is the charge for?
It's a class b and has nothing to do with fraud, theft, forgery or anything like that
I see answers like the first comment and the second and its conflicting. I want to be upright honest with them but I don't want to bring light and attention to something they didn't ask for
Since you mentioned it is not fraud related, I'm assuming you just got a disorderly conduct or something to that effect. Don't go out of your way to bring that to their attention, but be honest if it is brought up. Good luck.
Battery Misdemeanor (Originally Posted: 05/02/2011)
Got into an argument with ex last year. No violence was involved. Got arrested and convicted of misdemeanor battery. Will complete all of the requirements by June, which is the start date of my internship.
Got an internship offer in a great company as their business strategy analyst.
Was wondering if I my offer will be rescinded.
Please help.
I'm in the same boat as you, got arrested for 19 counts of M3 Invasion of Privacy, M3 Harrassment and M1 Stalking about a month ago, long after I sent out all my documents. My hearing hasn't happened yet but my lawyer was able to figure out a plea deal so they're going to chalk me up for summary offenses. It helped that I was cooperative during the investigation and it was my 1st offense, albeit quite serious.
Has your company completed a background check already? My company just started the screening process (they sent me an email saying the agency will call me asking for confirmation of birth date) so I told them everything and am hoping they won't rescind my offer. If you know your company hasn't started background checks yet, I would advise you to let them know before they hear it from the background screening agency they hire. Good luck man.
^ ex-gf? long-term crush?
The conviction will start showing up on the background checks about 6 months after the date of the conviction. So the only issue is whether the company will take action on it or not. That depends on the company.
haha, Good Lord.

I wouldn't say anything extra. Whatever disclosure form you signed was valid as of that date, so you didn't lie. There's nothing to be gained by attracting attention to the problem. Generally, the disclosure form only asks if you have been convicted, not arrested; obviously, you don't have a disposition yet, so you can truthfully say you have not been convicted.
Whether the catch you and care is a different question. If we're talking about a MIP or DUI I don't think it will be a problem either way. If it's something more serious that was either violent or calls into question your ethics, i.e. theft, then your offer is definitely at risk.
Misdemeanor and affects on possible future oppurtunities (Originally Posted: 04/05/2018)
Hey guys thanks for all that will take the time to respond! I have a slight problem on my hands as I have received a charge of reckless driving but have not been convicted yet. I am a 19 year old who is only a freshmen at this point and I was wondering what kind of impact could this have on any future internship or career prospects in any IB or HF firms?
