Misdemeanor Assault Background Check Complications

Hello,

I've recently been charged with a misdemeanor assault charge and been placed on informal probation because I got into a yelling argument with my sister and ended up breaking her phone. The charges will be expunged at the end of my probationary period. I go to a very good school (Marquette University), have excellent grades, have been involved in my school's applied investment management program, managing a portfolio of about 2 million dollars, have already had numerous internships, and have worked my way from the ground up to put myself into a position in which I can be successful. Because of my double major and the extra classes from applied investment management that I must take, I have about two years of school left although I've already studied for three. My probation will be over in three years, which is after I will start applying for jobs. I am wondering if this will bar me from jobs at bulge bracket banks in the fields of investment banking, private equity analysis, or wealth management, and what I can do to make myself even more attractive to offset this deficit. Should I pick up a few minors and stay in school until the probationary period has ended and the crime is expunged? Any advice on the subject would be very appreciated. Thank you very much for your time.

Dude, nothing to worry about. Only felonies or crimes involving dishonesty or theft will bar you. Trust me you'll be fine. I have the same charge :) Football player and I broke the guys nose so my crime was worse. If they give you an offer this won't prevent anything. Also it would help if your sister wrote a letter in support of you.

I find it bizarre that you have an assault charge involving your sister but I'll just leave that as an aside. In terms of your question, I think it could be an issue as it should come up in a background check. I leave it to others in terms of whether that gets you blacklisted but I think my firm might have an issue with it, particularly given you're coming in as an analyst. There will be 100 applicants that are effectively interchangeable with you that won't have that blemish so why take the risk.
