MIT Certificate in REFD - Will it help in Career Search?
Hi I am relatively new in this community and I've already found it very knowledgeable and helpful.
My background: I earned a MA in Economic Policy from a tier 2 university in Boston as an international student. I got into Real Estate 4 years ago as a Financial Analyst for a small PE advisory firm. 3 years ago I moved to NYC and started working as FA in a boutique RE brokerage firm - however, things did not go well as the firm has not been successful - I have to do sales for the firm(I have NY salesperson license) at the same time.
I do not think I have break into real estate yet, since my current career goal is Acquisition Analyst / Associate in Real Estate Development Company, or Real Estate Team in a Consulting Company; or even buy side banks' Asset Management team. ( I will explain why it still looks not so focused later)
I read others' discussions in the forum. People are saying networking is the most important way to get interviews. My struggles before I came to my current point were:
Most of my contacts are in RE brokerage - the Biggest problem is 99% of brokerage firm can not sponsor my working Visa! I have been approached by headhunters for FA / Associate position in some REPE firms, same issue, No Visa!
Later on, I found a mentor in buy-side and figured out my current targeted jobs ( 1. Has a focus to leverage my analytical skills in RE; 2. Sponsors working Visa)
I have kept learning while working in NYC. I took REFM course ( if necessary, take Lv3 certificate soon), Argus course in college, learned from Property Metrics blogs and other online courses ...
However, my career search still did not have any real success, so when I see the MIT Certificate Program, I wonder if that will be of some help to career search.
I was questioned during interviews by RE Development firm that I do not have RE degree nor experience working in development firms... though I explained my current work involved working with developers for land DD, market research and underwriting....
Since the certificate program would spent almost all of my savings, I am not sure if this will really boost my career search. Is there any one who can give comment based on your experience? If there's some one who has taken the Certificate, I am happy to know more.
Appreciate any useful comment!
