Modifying Job Title?
Hey guys,
Some background:
I did an internship at a Canadian boutique that describes themselves as a "merchant bank", dealing primarily with MM Canadian companies. I'm newer to investment banking so I'm not sure what a lot of the terms mean, but as far as I know, they do a lot of corporate finance (sub debt, mezz debt, syndicated loans) and would sometimes have equity positions in some of these companies.
My official title with them was just simply "Analyst". My group dealt specifically with under performing debt and investments and work with the client to restructure/refinance the loan or divest our equity stake by selling off the company. I would like a position in IBD at a Canadian big 5 bank. In order to make me more competitive, I was wondering if it was acceptable to change my job title on my resume to "Merchant Banking Analyst" or "Investment Analyst" to better reflect my position.
Thanks.
PS if anyone can help better classify what area of finance I worked at/in I'd appreciate that too. I've been told by a friend that it sounds like Leveraged Finance - but it doesn't really seem like that to me.
"Canadian BB"... does not compute.
All jokes aside, as long as you don't go overboard w/ the title changes, this is perfectly fine.
Can I change my job title to better reflect my responsibilities? (Originally Posted: 02/27/2018)
I am currently job searching for real estate positions in a new City. My current title has Director in the title, however my job position is closer to what the industry calls Managers (Project Manager, Development Manager, etc). I feel like I am being passed on jobs that I am applying for because hiring managers think I am overqualified due to the Director title. I have interviewed with 2 people and both have asked if I am "okay with the Manager title and dropping the Director" as if I was taking a step back. I am not taking a step back, but it is lateral.
What are thoughts on changing my Director title to the industry Manager standard on my resume to better reflect my position?
Thanks
Are you on good terms with your old company/manager? Would consider running it by your old boss. As long as he didn't have a problem with it, change your resume and then just point out during an interview: my title was technically Director but I felt it was misleading and my old boss agreed, so he was fine with the Manager title for my resume. Just a heads up if you end up checking references with my old HR dept."

My BO title is Operations Analyst - Markets for Global Securities Operations. Would it be alright to put one of the two titles below instead?
Markets Analyst - Global Securities Operations Analyst - Global Securities Operations
Any reason why you dont want to use the formal title? Are you trying to avoid the word "operations"?
I would just put "Analyst" and the formal group name.
@"devoutCapitalist"
I am trying to avoid the word operations. I'm applying for front office positions and I think if a recruiter sees operations my resume will go straight in the trash
It will take a few minutes to discover what your position is, based upon your contributions in your current role. I wouldn't be embarrassed or avoid saying that you're in operations. THere's nothing wrong with that. It's normal for people who aspire to transition into FO roles to inquire about opportunities.
How long have you been in your current role?
Network with FO peeps in addition to just applying if you're that worried about your background. No amount of job title alchelmy will enable you to shake the fact that you work in operations. Speak more to your quality of work.
A year. I can move into a senior financial analyst position but I'm wondering if that would help me to eventually land in the front office
I know it's a long shot for both but I don't know if I should target consulting or investment banking if I were to enter business school with my experience
Title Change (Originally Posted: 03/25/2010)
Does this happen often if at all? A 2009 graduate tells me that his title got changed without his consent within his first year working at a BB. He is in AM but got placed in a different role compared to his initial offer so his title changed. He didn't seem very happy.
Is this legitimate? I would think that the BB broke the contract and there should be some sort of penalty/consequences. Any insights?
haha penalty /consequences. right.

what?...say they broke your contract....then go home and sit on your ass without a job
No consequences...
Its the beauty / terror of at-will employment. Since you can just as easily re-neg / quit, they can just as easily fire you or change your role.
You can google 'consideration' in contracts if you want more detail.
They hold ALL the cards and they know it. Nothing you can do.
I know someone like that, too. (Who knows, we might be referring to the same person.) How much did his roles/responsibilities change? I'm assuming it wasn't a "demotion" of any kind. He was probably another victim of the bureaucratic system, which means there is nothing you can do but to accept the change or go home. I would guess that his title changed mostly in name (and not as much in role) due to changes in management.
yes, goldman did this to a few of their analysts during the bottom of the recession. there were analysts coming out of ivy league that got moved to MO or BO in their first year
