Moelis Boston Office
How is Moelis' Boston office? Do they do lots of deals over there, or would that be a very different experience from the NYC office? Interested in seeing if exit opps would be the same as in NYC office.

Relatively small office. When I interviewed there, the analysts were really polite and welcoming. I believe the office deals with the software and real estate industries.
Also, when interviewing for a position there, did they require you to travel to Boston for in-person office interviews? Just wondering as I am currently not based in Boston. I only recently heard about the team and so haven't been too far along the process just yet.
I've never had a final round interview/superday (for IB, Consulting, or Corporate Finance) where the company hasn't flown me out to the office for in-person interviews with various people in different positions (analysts through MDs/Partners).
How long did it take to hear back?
it was primarily homebuilding until very recently as they hired 2 new MDs to expand the Boston office. Now software tech and industrial tech will be another focus of the office. They're trying to expand quickly
Thanks both! Do you know anything about deal flow, exit opps, etc.? I'm not sure how the focus on, say real estate or homebuilding, impacts buyside opportunities or even the location as well (Boston, vs. NYC).
Not sure about buy-side since it is relatively a new office with few analysts. There are definitely buy-side prospects out there. A large MM PE fund like HIG Capital has an office in Boston. With the recent expansion into tech and industrials (I think), there is a more generalist role you'll play which helps for buy-side recruiting. Heavy deal flow relative to the number of analysts, I know they had to borrow some from other offices of Moelis to deal with the dealflow. As I've said, they are trying to expand quickly...
I can suggest that after 2 or 3 years at Moelis Boston it should be relatively easy to move over to the NYC office or LA office where they're known for top exits.

I had a superday in their Boston office this fall. Small group but they were just about doubling their junior staff following the hiring of a new software MD. definitely heavy deal flow, not as sure about exit ops. I don't want to say too much at risk of giving away my identity but if you pm me I'd be happy to tell you more

Has been one of the top RE groups in the region for a while, but they poached the head of DB Tech M&A and a couple of other MDs in the tech sector and are really trying to build out the group. The office actually has had the highest per-head revenue at the entire firm for years given how well the real estate and homebuilding group has performed, and I think they actually have had to outsource some of their busy work to bigger offices with more bandwith in past years. Just insane deal flow per head. Interesting to see how they perform in tech with the new team. DB MD was a serious rainmaker and big poach and he's building out an interesting team.
Classic Moelis office; really smart and motivated guys, laid-back culture about the small things and politics, but pretty strong expectations for work product and commitment.

I think pretty great, although I'll admit I'm not drawing on a ton of data points or anything. They have some solid relationships with local sponsors (and Boston has a very strong PE community), but the Moelis name also goes pretty far in terms of buy-side exits more broadly. I think the MDs are also pretty supportive and go to bat for guys who are solid performers and ask for advice about moving on.
Know a kid from their tech team...i think SF, maybe LA.... that went to KKR Tech buyout
